Diane Lane Cast As Ma Kent in Superman

The actress who was once Judge Hershey now has another iconic comic character to add to her CV

Lane previously played another iconic comic character, Judge Hershey, in the 1995 Judge Dredd movie, and her sci-fi credits also include 2008’s Jumper . She received an Oscar nomination for her role in 2002’s Unfaithful .

Zack Snyder reckons, “This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

At 45, she’s considerably younger than most screen Ma Kents (she’s even younger than Annette O’Toole was when she started out in the role on Smallville), but whether that has any bearing on how the role will be portrayed in the film has yet to be seen.
