He replaces Robert Downey Jr in the Alfonso Cuaron-directed SF thriller that’s been working its way through lead actors like Doctor Who
The film – about a female astronaut struggling to survive after a disaster on a spaceship – has been working its way through potential leads. At one point it was set to star Angelina Jolie and Robert Downey Jr, and Marion Cotillard, Scarlett Johansson, Blake Lively and Natalie Portman have all been in the running for the lead role at various points. Downey Jr only left the project when Bullock came on board, but we’re sure that’s just a coincidence and not because he doesn’t like her perfume, or something.
Apparently Clooney’s role isn’t huge, but it is pivotal in the first act. He will play an astronaut who survives the space disaster alongside Bullock. David ( Harry Potter ) Heyman in producing.
