RadioRadar podcast 89: Starting a Riot

Last week we said that Tom Magrino was going to be off for a few weeks. What changed? Well, a lot--you're going to want to hear this! We also talk about Halo, Far Cry, and much more.

Hosts: Hollander Cooper, Lucas Sullivan, Henry Gilbert, Ryan Taljonick, Tom Magrino
Question of the week: What movie concept or mechanic do you want to see added to games?
Intro song by Danny Baranowsky

I think the Adrenaline plot from Crank would make a good mechanic for a arcade style game. I could see it playing in the style of an old school Tony Hawk game in how you get points, but as you do these stunts you acquire more adrenaline. Where the longer you last the faster it drains away, meaning you not only have to plan but time these actions to chain combos. You never "win" the game, but you will always try to beat your score. And who knows maybe this could have been the killer app Nintendo could have used that vitality sensor for.

This was a great and fun podcast, fitting for Tom's last one. Goodbye Tom, good luck on your future job still playing League :P Dat Gamespot interview 0_0 As for you Donny, pretty great interview, the gang pretty much showed your problem just basically repeating your question in different variations, but it was great. As a Speech class taker i would advise preparing your questions and any relevance to them in advance, the exception being on reveals or games we barely had info on, either way that was a great interview and im looking forward to more. CORRECTIONS, for Henry: The future Mario NFC Figurines were never meant to justify the Gamepad, it was stated to justify the NFC reader on the Gamepad after Pokemon Rumble U failed to do so, and even then Iwata said in BOTH financial meetings this year (January and April) that they want to justify the Gamepad with more Gamepad heavy games, i find that as a miss on your part when you assumed Nintendo thinks the only thing we need for the Gamepad are the toys. Here's the quote itself regarding E3 "Also, at that time, we will introduce multiple games that are designed to introduce players to the value of the Wii U Game Pad by demonstrating playstyles only possible because of it. These titles have been developed by internal teams under the guidance of Mr. Miyamoto (Board Member, General Manager of the Development Division). The software titles that we will show at E3, which make use of the GamePad, will range from near complete titles to titles that are early in development, but will demonstrate the titles’ core appeals." Get it right Henry, your the Nintendo Expert here. QOTW: There are movies out there that focus on the victims/people/creatures caught up in major events and seeing it through their eyes, in spirit of that we should get games that take place on certain game's major moment and simulate how it affects them. Like villagers when monsters take over the town in RPG's or victims hiding during COD battles and such.

I want games to come with popcorn , nachos, candy, and whatever else I want yet still cost 60$ since that's about how hard theaters try to screw you
  • Gouranga - May 19, 2014 1:26 p.m.

What the hell is happening at GR? :( Why is everyone leaving? We had to deal with the departure of Zach, then Greg... And now Tom? WHY? :( I feel like I lost another good friend. I cannot imagine my friday nights without listening to you guys. I feel like I've got a bunch of new friends without even knowing you personally, which is the beauty of these podcasts... I cannot even begin to tell you how many times I've laughed myself to tears with these 89 podcasts, either with the craziness of the subject or with everyone of you talking/shouting at the same time. What can I say... You people are the best! Anyway, best of luck to you, Tom! And for the rest of you, please don't leave. Mmmkay?

QOTW: Movie isn't out yet but they should totally take the synopsis from Edge of Tomorrow and add it to a game. You are a soldier with a superhuman suit and you have a task and every time you die, you restart from the beginning of the same day and have to retry it. Over. And over again. lEarning from your mistakes and making gradual progress wait.. Advanced Warfighter the movie?! or any video game ever -_-

I am not sure this technically counts as a correction but you said that Far Cry 4 was a reason to get next gen, but it is still coming out on PS3 and Xbox 360, so yeah...
  • GR HollanderCooper - May 19, 2014 12:37 a.m.

But it'll look SO MUCH better!
  • Cyberninja - May 19, 2014 5:41 a.m.

But I don't want to spend $460 on so much better when I can get the same game for $60
  • supergiraffe - May 17, 2014 9:15 p.m.

Stories where the conflict is because of the characters personal failings, rather then outside forces. It's hard to explain, and I don't know if it'd really work as a game. You get movies like Her, or Shame, that are all about the characters dealing with their own failings as humans, or their anxieties, as opposed to them actively battling a physical thing in the real world. I'll miss you Tom, you were a great host and you once gave me a copy of Pid because I like euchre and Magic: The Gathering. Good luck.

Taking ideas from the theatrical movies I watch, I'd like to see a lot more hardcore penetration in games. Sure, every once in a while you get to see something like War from Darksiders jam his single sword into a boss, but I'd like to see some DV/DA. Imagine four swords sliding deep into a foe while you mash all of the face buttons in a rhythmic motion.

Whelp, I completely lost it during that Aaliyah bit. Thanks for that guys. I always thought the baby sound in that song sounded exactly like the baby instrument from Mario Paint.

80s-STYLE MUSIC MONTAGE!! Imagine how much more fun role-playing games would be if, instead of having to endure 15 hours of miserable level grinding, you could do it in three minutes with a WILD MUSIC MONTAGE!! There's Tidus and Yuna throwing summoned monsters at each other. They're so wacky! Wakka's doing WHAT on a Chocobo?? Oh Auron, you make the craaaaziest faces! That's right Kimahri, you CAN hit that jumpshot after all! All it took was practice and the inspired stylings of Mark Vieha’s “Way To Go." Now go take on that Sin before he wins the Tri-Games and gets the Lambda Lambda Lambdas kicked off campus! Side note: Say it ain't so, Magrino!

I would love to see more directors/actors commentary options. Basically hotspots or pickups around the level that activate a commentary about the particular scene, or character. I think Half Life 2 did this, but I can't recall too well.
  • EAC73 - May 17, 2014 3:44 p.m.

Yeah Half-Life 2 did under the name Half-Life Lost Coast.
