X-Files revival lands Robbie Amell and Lauren Ambrose

The X-Files revival has snagged two TV veterans to aid Mulder and Scully in the six-episode event series, with Six Feet Under's Lauren Ambrose and The Flash himself Robbie Amell set to appear in one episode apiece as fellow FBI agents. Variety stresses that despite their fleeting similarities to David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson they won't be playing younger versions of the headlining team.

Ambrose plays Agent Einstein - cue a quip from Mulder - who's described as "sharp and confident" and Amell plays the "smart and smooth" Agent Miller. While neither description would be out of place in a Cutco catalogue, it's likely that both are simply skilled agents.

The pair join a slew of guest stars including Joel McHale, Annet Mahendru, Rhys Darby and Kumail Nanjiani. Mitch Pileggi returns in a regular supporting role as Mulder and Scully's boss and ally, Walter Skinner, while William B. Davis will be reaching for the Marlboros as the Smoking Man.

The X-Files premieres in the US on January 24, 2016.
