First trailer lands for The Magicians

The first trailer has appeared online for SyFy’s The Magicians, a new small-screen adaptation of Lev Grossman’s popular series of novels set in a secretive college of magic in New York.

However, we’re not talking about rabbits from hats or elaborate card tricks, because as the trailer makes very clear, “magic is real.” It’s a lesson that young protagonist Quentin is going to discover up close and personal…

The books have been described, somewhat reductively, as Harry Potter for adults, and there are some surface level similarities between Quentin’s arrival at a seat of magical learning and Harry’s antics at Hogwarts. However, there’s enough on show in this latest trailer to suggest that The Magicians can carve out a niche all of its own. Consider us intrigued…

Starring Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve and Arjun Gupta, The Magicians will begin a 12-episode run in 2016, with an exact air date to be confirmed.
