Universal virtually created the monster movie genre singlehandedly in the ’30s. The company certainly created the screen versions of cinemas most memorable monsters. In the ’30s and ’40s Universal was the monster factory, and the creatures it created have endured the decades. Even today when we think of Frankenstein’s monster, Dracula or The Invisible Man, the images that pop first into your mind are images created by Universal, so heavily are they now ingrained in the zeitgeist (which is especially ironic when it comes to the Invisible Man).
And now Universal (UK) is releasing eight chilling classics on Blu-ray for the first time ever, in Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection , released on 1 October 2012.
Those films are:
Dracula (1931)
Frankenstein (1931)
The Mummy (1932)
The Invisible Man (1933)
Bride Of Frankenstein (1935)
The Wolf Man (1941)
Phantom Of The Opera (1943)
Creature From The Black Lagoon (1954)
And you can find out more information about the vast array of bonus features here .
But the burning question is: which is the greatest classic Universal monster? That’s what we want you to tell us by voting in the poll below, and we’ll reveal the results on 1 October, the day the box-set goes on sale.
