First official pic from James Cameron's Avatar

The mastermind behind the Terminator franchise, Aliens and Titanic is returning to sci-fi this December with Avatar. We spoke to the director and some of the cast - including Sigourney Weaver - at Comic Con, and you can read some of that in the next issue of SFX (number 187 on sale on 26 August).

But even then there were few pictures available from within the film. This weekend, however, the first still from the movie has been released by Fox. In it you can see Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, a paraplegic war veteran who gets the opportunity to travel to distant planet Pandora using a cloned alien body (his "avatar").

The photo above shows Sully in front of the tank that houses his new avatar.

20th Century Fox will be holding a special preview of 15 minutes of Avatar at cinemas on 21 August in an event called Avatar Day. SFX will be at one of these screenings in London so we'll let you know what we see. In the meantime, let us know what you think of this first photo.
