Video game movies are one of the hottest current box office trends, with blockbuster games and indies alike getting adapted to the screen. The Super Mario Galaxy is the latest in the string of great video game films, with anticipation rapidly building for the next wave.

Up next there's Mortal Kombat 2, which promises a fairly straightforward adaptation of the format of the game, with a stronger focus on the concept of the Outworld tournament than its predecessor. At the same time, the other giant of the fighting game genre, Street Fighter, is getting its own over-the-top movie that aims to balance the inherent comedy of the classic franchise with its own return to form with a massive tournament.

With even more highly anticipated video game movies on the horizon including Zach Cregger's Resident Evil, Nintendo adaptation The Legend of Zelda, and of course Sonic 4, there's a lot to keep track of. Fortunately, we've put together a guide to all the upcoming video game movies in 2026 and beyond that will help you stay up to speed. For more, you can dig into our guide to upcoming movies across all genres, and our guides to upcoming Switch 2 games and new PS5 games.

Upcoming video game movies in 2026

Mortal Kombat 2

Mortal Kombat movie - a man stands poised to fight with his hands wrapped up

(Image credit: New Line Studios/Warner Bros.)

Release date: May 15, 2026

Get over here! Fresh off the surprise success of Mortal Kombat on HBO Max in 2021 comes news of a sequel. As per Deadline, Moon Knight’s Jeremy Slater is penning the script, and Simon McQuoid returns as director. Karl Urban is the headline newcomer, playing movie star Johnny Cage. The sequel, though, should answer fans’ calls for a tournament – and also deal with the returning threat of Outworld. At the very least, it should be better than 1997’s poorly-received Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Mortal Kombat 2 has finished filming and is set to release in May 2026, after being delayed from October 2025.

Resident Evil

The first Resident Evil movie

Release date: September 18, 2026

Listen, I have a soft spot for the original Resident Evil movies (no matter how questionable some of them are) so, personally, I'm very excited about getting a new adaptation of Capcom's iconic franchise in 2026. Directed by Zach Cregger, who previously helmed horror hits Barbarians and Weapons, the Resident Evil reboot will be taking us to Raccoon City once again. While we don't know plot details yet or if it will be adapting any specific game, we do know that it is currently filming and that we can expect to see a trailer in at least a few months as well. Exciting times!

Street Fighter

Release date: October 16, 2026

Sony is diving into Capcom's legendary Street Fighter series to bring us a new movie. Now, if you know anything about Street Fighter, you know that while they make some of the best fighting games, all their past movie adaptations have been box-office flops. The upcoming video game movie has the opportunity to finally give fans the Street Fighter film they deserve, so fingers crossed that the flick doesn’t get a K.O. like its predecessors. Currently, we don't know much in terms of plot; however, we do know that the Street Fighter movie is sporting a massive cast packed with a few A-listers. Hopefully, we get to see a trailer and some story hints soon!

Madden

Releasing on Amazon Prime Video this year is a movie about the development of a video game, instead of a straight adaptation. However, we are still including it on our list since the Madden game series is involved here. This new film follows the life of John Madden and details his involvement in making some of the best sports games around with the NFL Madden games. The film has a stacked cast as well, with Nicolas Cage as John Madden, and Christian Bale, along with Kathryn Hahn, also cast.

Angry Birds 3

Angry Birds - A yellow bird talks to a red bird with prominent eyebrows, both look on with wide eyes

Release date: December 23, 2026

Birds of a feather stick together in this threequel from Rovio. While plot details are thin on the ground, we have seen a high-flying teaser. In it, Red (Jason Sudeikis) gets into the series' trademark slingshot and takes to the skies. As of right now, Angry Birds 3 does finally have a release date set for late 2026. We'll have more news – including cast and story information – as we get it.

Upcoming video game movies in 2027

Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Knuckles, Sonic and Tails in Sonic 3 (2024)

Release date: March 19, 2027

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has grossed over $1 billion worldwide, so it's no surprise that we are getting Sonic the Hedgehog 4. While we don't know the plot of the upcoming sequel yet, the mid-credits of Sonic 3 did introduce us to a bunch of new characters, such as Amy Rose. And we also know that our favourite edgy hedgehog, Shadow, made it out of the final battle alive as well. Even without any plot details, though, we are sure the movie will be another hit thanks to the main cast returning and Jeff Fowler being back in the director's chair. For more on the franchise, you can also read our Sonic 3 review.

The Legend of Zelda

Link in The Legend of Zelda movie

Release date: May 7, 2027

A live-action Legend of Zelda movie has been officially confirmed, with a release date of May 7, 2027. As is typical of Nintendo, the company made the announcement on its app in March 2025. After years of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto rejecting the idea of an onscreen adaptation, the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie changed his mind, and now Link is heading to Hollywood. The production is a joint venture between Nintendo and Sony Pictures, which brought Uncharted to life on the big screen. Wes Ball is on board to direct the upcoming video game movie, with Miyamoto also working as a producer. The two lead stars have been cast too, with Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bro Bragason as Zelda.

A Minecraft Movie 2

A Minecraft Movie chicken jockey scene

Release date: July 23, 2027

After being one of the biggest movies of 2025, we got news that we were getting A Minecraft Movie sequel a few months after the first hit the screen. That's right, in 2027, we now know that we will be heading back to the blocky world packed with creative possibilities. So far, no cast announcements have been made, so we don't know if Jack Black will be returning as Steve this time around. In terms of our own predictions for A Minecraft Movie 2, personally, we think it won't be following Steve this time round since Black has his hands full with Jumanji 3; however, we could be wrong, and we'll keep you posted as and when news comes our way.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

Release date: 2027

Sony announced a Horizon Zero Dawn movie in January 2025, though details are thin on the ground at the moment. "Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn," said head of PlayStation Productions Asad Qizilbash. "Just imagine, Aloy's beloved origin story set in a vibrant, far future world filled with giant machines, brought to you for the first time on the big screen." A release window was announced later in the year, confirming that the movie will arrive in 2027.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring

Release date: TBA

Elden Ring is the latest video game classic to make the leap from consoles to cinema. Civil War's Alex Garland is taking the reins of Torrent and company in The Lands Between as writer and director, though little else is known about the project. That hasn't stopped fans speculating, however. There's a growing surge of players who would be happy to see Vyke, the Tarnished, who came oh-so-close to becoming the Elden Lord before our player returned to the world, front and centre of an Elden Ring movie.

Release date: TBA

Also on the way from Sony is a Helldivers 2 movie, though, again, there aren't many details available at the moment. We'll keep you posted on updates, so keep checking back. We do suspect that we'll be seeing some kind of fun sci-fi movie that isn't afraid to have a few laughs. So, figures crossed, we get a film similar to the likes of Starship Troopers.

BioShock

BioShock - A Big Daddy with a giant drill for hand stands in the underwater city known as Rapture

Release date: TBA

Welcome to Rapture. BioShock’s depiction of a Randian aquatic paradise sunk by greed and wild ambition almost demands a big-screen outing. After repeated attempts to adapt it elsewhere, Netflix has confirmed it’s working on a BioShock movie. I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence is helming the project while Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049) is on scripting duties. Little else is known of the BioShock movie, though Lawrence recently told GamesRadar that it will have some "new little twists" for seasoned veterans who have already taken a trip under the sea.

Death Stranding

Normal Reedus in Death Stranding

Release date: TBA

A Death Stranding movie, in partnership with production company A24, is in the works. Developer Hideo Kojima has already said he will be "deeply involved" in "producing, supervising, plotting, look, design, and content of the film adaptation of DS, just not in charge of directing." Released in 2019, Death Stranding featured Norman Reedus as Sam Porter Bridges, a courier attempting to connect a broken America in the wake of the apocalyptic 'death stranding' event. Kojima has stated, however, that it will not be a "direct translation" of the game.

Death Stranding anime

Release date: TBA

A24's Death Stranding isn't the only adaptation in development. Elsewhere, Kojima Productions are working on an anime film that'll tell a new story set in the world of Beached Things and porter suits. We don't know all that much about the flick – which has the working title 'Death Stranding: Mosquito' – just yet, but Hideo Kojima and its director Hiroshi Miyamoto unveiled an intriguing first look at Kojima Productions' 10th anniversary event Beyond the Strand in Tokyo recently.

The duo also teased that the subtitle refers to the fact that the main character... sucks through his tentacled face – not blood, though, as you'd expect from a 'Mosquito'. It was also confirmed that the movie's animation would be hand-drawn before being digitally assembled, and that Aaron Guzikowski (Raised by Wolves) will write the scenario script.

Detective Pikachu 2

Detective Pikachu - Pikachu looks up in concern

(Image credit: Legendary Pictures / The Pokemon Company)

Release date: TBA

Pika-pi! Detective Pikachu has sleuthed his way to a sequel. Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel is directing the feature, while Deadline reports that Ryan Reynolds, who voiced Pikachu in the original, could be involved in the upcoming feature. Live-action lead Justice Smith, meanwhile, isn't sure if he's back for more Poke-action. He told Screen Rant, "I don't know if there is going to be a reunion. I've heard rumors that they might be doing a second one, but I don't know if I'm a part of it."

Dredge

Dredge - A boat sails across the water with a lighthouse to left and sun setting on the horizon

Release date: TBA

Described as "The Sixth Sense on Water", the hit indie game Dredge is being reeled in for a movie adaptation. The title itself follows a fisherman who, while trawling the depths, encounters several Lovecraftian nasties lurking in the beyond. Production company Story Kitchen's Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, Dan Jevons, and Timothy I. Stevenson said in a statement: "Dredge is a captivatingly eerie and profoundly rich story that had us completely hooked from the very beginning!" No release date has been given for Dredge at the time of writing.

Duke Nukem

Release date: TBA

The crude action hero pastiche famously spent a lot of time in development limbo for the long, long awaited video game Duke Nukem Forever. We hope it’s not a 14-year wait this time. The Hollywood Reporter says Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Hayden Schlossberg, and Jon Hurwitz will be producing alongside Dune and Godzilla’s production company Legendary, but that’s all we know at this early juncture.

El Paso, Elsewhere

El Paso, Elsewhere - a man shooting at two demons.

Release date: TBA

Hands up, who had El Paso, Elsewhere on their bingo card of video game movies? If so, do you have the lottery numbers? That isn't to say El Paso, Elsewhere isn't deserving of a big screen adaptation. Far from it. Still, the cult vampire shooter from Strange Scaffold went a little under the radar upon its release in 2023. The film is set to follow James Savage (LaKeith Stanfield) as he battles with his toxic ex-girlfriend's plans to end the world. To save the day, James enters a reality-bending universe to face down his evil ex.

Gears of War

Gears of War - Marcus holds dogtags in one hand and a gun in the other as an army of soldiers marches

Release date: TBA

The thick-necked, chainsaw-wielding soldiers that make up Gears of War's cast have always felt tailor-made for the action movie treatment. Netflix is finally delivering the goods with the announcement that Gears is being adapted into "a live-action feature film" with an adult animated series also in the works. Expect to see Gears' motley crew of battle-hardened COGs fight waves of locusts on the planet of Sera in the near future. Dune co-writer Jon Spaihts has been confirmed to pen the script, per Variety.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima - Jin holds a mask as red leaves fall around him

Release date: TBA

Ghost of Tsushima took PlayStation by storm upon its release in 2020. Sucker Punch’s samurai epic – which told the tale of Jin Sakai fighting back after a Mongol invasion of his home island – has sold close to 10 million copies. PlayStation Productions will be hoping that success translates to theater tickets. John Wick director Chad Stahelski is on board, and he’s already spoken of his intentions to have a completely authentic Japanese cast. "Honestly, it's probably the same things that would scare the shit out of most people. It's a fantasy period piece," the director told Collider. "It's done with reverence to Akira Kurosawa, who's probably in the top five biggest influences of my life as far as film goes. It's a chance to push technology and people in a story that's timeless. While we're still waiting on a solid release date, Stahelski said that the movie does have a script.

Release date: TBA

As per Variety, Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson is producing this adaptation of Hazelight Studio’s inventive platform adventure. It Takes Two, which took home Game of the Year at the 2021 Game Awards, revolves around a bickering couple who are trapped in the bodies of their daughters’ dolls. Naturally. Just Cause

Just Cause 4 - a man parashutes down through the sky towards the ocean with a rocket launcher on his back as explosions set off in the distance

Release date: TBA

Just Cause has hit a few snags in its long journey to cinemas. In 2017, Jason Momoa was attached to play revolutionary Rico Rodriguez with Brad Peyton directing. Peyton eventually dropped out, with John Wick creator Derek Kolstad jumping on board as producer and writer. Michael Dowse, director of Stuber, is now also attached to the project, though Momoa’s status is unclear. Don’t worry, though the main selling point is still here: the grapple hook is reportedly going to be part of the Just Cause movie. If the games are any indication, expect sun-kissed vistas, tons of explosions, and insane stunts.

Mega Man

Mega Man - Mega Man shoots his hand canon against an orange background

Release date: TBA

The Blue Bomber doesn’t feel like prime material for a cinematic reinvention – yet here we are. The legendary video game icon has bleeped and blooped his way through decades of rock-hard platformers, taking down arch nemesis Dr. Wily and his legion of Robot Masters across several console generations. Now, it seems, Mega Man is finally making the jump from consoles to a cinematic adventure. Netflix is bringing the Mega Man movie to life alongside writers and directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Paranormal Activity 3).

Metal Gear Solid

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain - Snake is prone on the ground with a gun in his hand

Release date: TBA

Metal Gear?! That’s right: Konami and Hideo Kojima’s legendary stealth franchise is sneakily making its way to cinemas. Directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts (of Kong: Skull Island fame), Metal Gear Solid will see Oscar Isaac slip into the Sneaking Suit of Solid Snake. Speaking to EW, Vogt-Roberts outlined his plan to "create a new type of action on screen that also is based in the quietness of the stealth" but that we shouldn’t expect a “one-to-one” translation of the video game experience. So, hour-long CODEC calls about nuclear disarmament are probably off the table. In 2024, an update on the project came from producer Ari Arad, who said work on the script is currently underway.

Portal

Portal 2

Release date: TBA

You’d be forgiven for forgetting that the Portal movie was even a thing. Quietly announced way back in 2013, the adaptation of Valve’s hilarious portal-based puzzler is finally moving again. "We actually do have a script that’s being written for the Portal movie now at [Warner Bros.]. We’re really excited about the take and the pitch, so it feels like that thing’s finally on the rails," producer J.J. Abrams told IGN. For now, we sit and wait – and hope the script (and the cake) isn’t a lie. You monsters. If you want a refresher on one of the best PC games ever made, read our Portal review.

Saints Row

Saints Row - Two figures stand with guns, one points a pistol at person on the ground, while the other holds a rifle and looks out ahead

Release date: TBA

The recent Saints Row remake may have received a middling reception, but Saints Row – as far as we know – is still being adapted into a movie. The one-time GTA rival found its funny bone in later years, but the movie’s writer Greg Russo has announced his intentions to take inspiration from the likes of The Warriors and Escape From New York for the script. F. Gary Gray (The Fate of the Furious) is set to direct.

Release date: TBA

After taking the world by storm in Barbie (aka one of the best movies on HBO Max right now), Margot Robbie has set her sights on another iconic franchise, The Sims. That’s right, the Hollywood star is set to produce a live-action take on Maxis’ beloved franchise. EA confirmed The Sims movie in September 2024 and that Amazon MGM Studios is involved in the project, too. Amazon MGM Studios has co-produced and distributed tons of quality films, the most recent examples being the likes of Challengers and Blink Twice. So, it’s safe to say that The Sims movie is in capable hands and will likely have a release date announced soon. So, keep your eyes on this page! Sifu

Sifu

Release date: TBA

One of the most recent projects on this list to spring into life, Sifu is all set to be adapted to live-action by John Wick creator Derek Kolstad. Deadline reports that the adaptation of Sloclap's hard-as-nails beat 'em up was the subject of a "competitive pursuit" from several production companies before Kolstad's Story Kitchen won out. It even has a killer elevator pitch: John Wick meets Old. For a gaming refresher, check out our Sifu review.

Stray

Release date: TBA

Yep, Stray is purring its way into cinemas. Currently in the works at Annapurna's animation studio, the adventure will likely follow the plot of the stealth game. There, players controlled a stray cat who had to navigate a post-apocalyptic world filled with various nasties - and a friendly robot named B-12. We love this upcoming movie's source material, and you can find out why it holds a place in our hearts by checking out our Stray review.

Space Channel 5

Space Channel 5

Release date: TBA

Few could have predicted Space Channel 5 would have been plucked from (relative) obscurity to make its way to the big screen. Still, the SEGA Dreamcast cult classic is coming to cinemas. According to THR, it has a deliciously madcap premise that follows the plot of the original 1999 title. Space Channel 5 "tells the story of a hapless fast-food worker who is recruited by a freedom reporter from the future to save the world from aliens using the one thing that unites all people on the planet: our love of silly viral dances." Cosmic.

Split Fiction

Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster in Split Fiction

Release date: TBA

As It Takes Two continues in development, the latest game from Hazelight Studios, Split Fiction, is also up for film treatment. Multiple studios are believed to be in contention for the rights to the inventive co-op game where two authors are trapped in their own fictional universes. There's a lot of potential here, hence the competition in Hollywood. Jon M. Chu will direct, with Deadpool and Wolverine writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick penning the script. Sydney Sweeney will star, though it's not known yet if she'll be playing Mio or Zoe.

Streets of Rage

Streets of Rage 4

Release date: TBA

Derek Kolstad is set to have a busy few years. The John Wick creator is also involved in this adaptation of the classic co-op side-scrolling beat 'em up Streets of Rage. "When [dj2 Entertainment's Dmitri M. Johnson] first mentioned the idea of cracking a Streets of Rage movie, I was so immediately freaking in," Kolstad said in a statement (via Deadline). "And to play with Sega? The 10-year-old me is still grinning."

Uncharted 2

Tom Holland in the Uncharted movie

Release date: TBA

Despite radio silence on the project for some time, it has recently been confirmed that Uncharted 2 is still happening. Tom Holland is expected to return as the charming adventurer Nathan Drake, as is Mark Wahlberg's wisecracking Sully. Given how the first movie's post-credits scene ended, we wouldn't be surprised if this outright adapts Naughty Dog's initial 2007 game Drake's Fortune.

Watch Dogs

Release date: TBA

Based on Ubisoft's open-world series, Watch Dogs features Tom Blyth and Sophie Wilde starring in the latest video game adaptation to head to cinemas. Mathieu Turi is set to direct. The 2014 original title saw players take on the role of vigilante hacker Aiden Peace. Two sequels, Watch Dogs 2 and the London-based Watch Dogs: Legion, followed in 2016 and 2020, respectively.

Yakuza

Yakuza: Like a Dragon - Kiryu looks down

(Image credit: Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio)

Release date: TBA

Real Kiryu-chan fans will know all about the 2007 live-action Yakuza movie. This is a different beast entirely. According to a Variety report in 2020, 1212 Entertainment and Wild Sheep Content will produce – though no casting or director news has been announced since then. "Yakuza offers us a new playground in which to set compelling stories with complex characters in a unique environment that audiences have rarely seen before. The saga of Kazuma Kiryu has a built-in cinematic appeal – a mix of kinetic action with bursts of comedy, multiple converging storylines, and a gripping journey towards redemption," 1212 Entertainment said at the time.

A Yakuza TV show has since released in October 2024, meaning this film could be dead and buried for the time being. Read what the cast had to tell us exclusively about the project.
