Mafia 3 has been pretty quiet since we first saw it tear up the streets of 1968 New Orleans back in August, but it hasn't been sleeping with the fishes (or the gators) since then. Hangar 13 systems designer Seth Rosen shared several new screenshots of Mafia 3 in a GDC presentation on "Adding Life to your Level" and the slides recently went live for all to see.
You may or may not care about Rosen's advice on making virtual worlds feel active beyond your personal involvement (he also worked as a level designer on BioShock Infinite, which had some excellent urban activity scenes between all the rail riding and shooting) but you should be able to appreciate the new screens if you have any interest in the Mafia series.
Raucous action and revenge stories aside, video games can be phenomenal portals to fictional and historical places. I'm really looking forward to exploring Hangar 13's take on New Orleans at the height of the US's involvement in the Vietnam War and tail end of the Civil Rights Movement. Mafia 3 is still planned for release some time in 2016.
