Level-5 is bringing the legendary Layton
name to iPods and iPads, but not in a way puzzle fans might expect. Over the
weekend, the studio announced it will be dusting off its 2009 DS detective game
Mystery Room and rebranding it as a Professor Layton spin-off for iOS devices
called Layton Brothers: Mystery Room.
The app will star Professor Layton's son,
Alphendi, whose very existence is another mystery altogether. Seriously, Layton
has a son? And he's not even the least bit jealous and/or concerned that his
dad has been tripping around the world with a 13-year-old sidekick? Where's his
top hat?! While we ponder these troubling puzzles, check out the first trailer:
Layton Brothers: Mystery Room is named
after the Scotland Yard investigation division where Alphendi and his newbie
partner Lucy Creila work. The game will focus more on using detective skills at
various crimes scenes rather than solving riddles. Style-wise, however, it
looks exactly like a Layton game should, and the pluralized Layton Brothers suggests
it is but one in a series of similar titles starring other Layton offspring.
Hmm, I guess this means the Professor was a bit of a player, no?
Level-5 has not given a release date for
the game, but it has launched an official game site and posted these
early images to mull over. So what are you waiting for? Get mulling!
