Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio for westerners) is the next Dreamcast classic to receive an HD upgrade. Today, Sega announced its street art adventure will return as a download on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and PC digital download stores as soon as this summer.

The high-definition revamp (which was all but announced last week) will usher in the return of Beat and his “Graffiti Gang Gangsters” (aka GGs) in a skating game that challenges players to paint the districts of Tokyo-to in colorful tags while avoiding street gangs and a corrupted police force. Familiar taggers like Professor K, Gum, and Tab will, of course, come along for the ride.

To celebrate the return of its “rudies”, Sega will be selecting 18 fan-made graffiti designs to feature in the Jet Set Radio re-release. The design contest is open to North American and UK artists, and winners will receive a prize pack containing a Etón Rukus solar-powered Bluetooth sound system, Jet Set Radio hoodie, and other branded swag. Read the full competition rules on Sega's official contest site.

I'm so pumped for this! Now if only Capcom would do the same with Okami... I can dream you guys, I can dream.

Definitely want to play this, missed it the first time around. I guess the series is going to possibly get a new entry soon? Sounds awesome.

So, uh... While we're re-releasing old games that kicked ass, why not get Buffy the Vampire Slayer out there? Not the shitty Chaos Bleeds one, but the first one for the original Xbox. That game was amazing.

"Jet Set Radio (Jet Grind Radio for westerners)" What could that possible mean? In the West, i.e. North America, it's always been JSR.

The original that was released on the Dreamcast was called Jet Grind Radio. The sequel for the Xbox used the Jet Set Radio Future title. So yeah, it's right.

I'm from the UK and I've always known it as Jet Set Radio. I knew that some versions were called Grind rather than Set but I've always called it JSR.

Yes, but he was referring to what it was called in North America, not anywhere else, really.

I can't wait to have SEGA remind me that graffiti is bad before I can play their game! I always found it strange that JSRF needed to have such a warning against street art, but Halo never tells me not to shoot aliens or space marines.

Is that a remake or just an HD Re-Release. I'd love some new levels or customizer stuff. AYOO
  • veryweirdguy - February 28, 2012 11:57 a.m.

I would assume it's similar to the other Dreamcast ports (Sonic Adventure, Space Channel 5 etc) - HD re-releases, no "new" features. Stil worth looking forward to, most definitely!

  • silax - February 28, 2012 11:14 a.m.

    I'd rather have JSRF.
  • Zixor - February 28, 2012 12:36 p.m.

I think SEGA assumed that Jet Set Radio would sell based on fans who only played the (far more popular) sequel on the Xbox. As one of those fans, I appreciate the gesture.
