Here's some new images for Final Fantasy XIII-2, showing a variety of modes from Square Enix's upcoming spinoff. There's a good look at the game's antagonist, Caius Ballad, who comes off every bit as menacingly flamboyant as you'd expect a Final Fantasy villain to be; and traveling merchant Chocolina, who's billed as comic relief and whose theme music you probably have stuck in your head already.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is due for North American release in January of next year. We got a good look at the title earlier this month, and found the game's time-bending narrative a clever way of delivering a far less linear game than its predecessor. Producer Yoshinori Kitase recently spoke highly about the experience of building on what his team's already achieved with Final Fantasy XIII – but warned fans that revisiting older games is far more difficult than building on current titles. Which is to say, one suspects, that he hopes FFXIII-2 is engrossing enough to stop fans asking about that pesky FFVII remake for a few months. Deal?

First game I've ever preordered. Also, when the game comes out, it will be the first Collector's Edition I've ever owned. Man, it's going to be a long wait.

I will have to take note of that sitting pose for later, whoever that is is a prodigy. It is beautiful, truly a work of art how he sits.
