Bethesda may not actually have three big projects in the works

Last month, Bethesda boss Todd Howard said (opens in new tab) that the studio had "three longer term projects that we’re doing that are all … big and crazy but in many ways different to things we’ve done before." Now, Howard is saying he regrets that statement, telling Gamesindustry.biz (opens in new tab) that it doesn't accurately reflect what's happening in-house.

"I should have never said a number because we have so many things. You could add it up in different ways. You could say it's bigger or smaller," he said. "I think the larger point was, no one should expect to hear about those [games] anytime soon. We always overlap projects. We just have more going on now than we had before."

That part is definitely true - Bethesda certainly has more happening for it now than previously. A new branch was recently opened in Montreal (opens in new tab), and the success of Fallout Shelter could mean more expansion into mobile gaming. Howard also said the studio is "exploring" virtual reality, though he didn't want to elaborate "until we've figured some things out."

So while Bethesda is assuredly working on new projects, maybe don't expect three, or four, or two, or any number, really. What happens will happen, when it happens. Three pieces of DLC (opens in new tab)on the other hand, you can expect that for Fallout 4 (opens in new tab).
