15 minutes of We Happy Few gameplay will give you your daily dose of joy

As we noted in our We Happy Few preview, the upcoming game from developers Compulsion is a first-person survival game where, instead of being surrounded by forests or monsters, players will instead be in the midst of “a technicolor asylum predicated on drug abuse and mandatory revelry.”

In the development studio’s twisted vision of ‘60s England, the citizens of Wellington Wells take a drug known as Joy to keep themselves, well, joyful. Meanwhile, authority figure Uncle Jack is there to keep an eye on the residents, especially those who are off their meds and can see the world for what it truly is. Like you. Anyone seen acting outside societal norms, not being joyful, is dealt with violently.

It’s a concept that can be a little difficult to wrap your head around, but Compulsion has something to help with that: 15 minutes of raw, pre-alpha gameplay. Check it out:

Compulsion has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the game, to help finish development. At the time of this writing, it has raised roughly one-fourth of its $200,000 goal, with 29 days remaining.
