Is this 103-level epic the most insanely over-the-top fan-game ever made? (Yes, yes it is)

How far would you go to pay tribute to the game you love? Write a forum post? Draw a picture? Debase yourself by composing some sexy fan fiction? Write to the developer in your own blood professing a tearful need to touch him or her and smell their musk with your snivelling nose?

Well these guys have gone further (in a way). How does dedicating eight years of one's life to creating the ultimate playable remake/tribute/ultra-edition remix of your favourite game with enough extra content to sink a thousand Mortal Kombats sound? Yeah, exactly. And how about doing all that for Streets of Rage? Read on. I have some terrifying stats for you. Terrifying like angry robots.

103 levels. 19 playable characters. 64 enemies. 40 cut-scenes. 8 endings. 76 music tracks. 30 configurable options. Every character, stage and enemy from the original three games has been remastered and added to. There are new special moves, new graphical touches and new ambient sound effects. And everything has been done from scratch, without using a single line of the original Mega Drive games' code. Sounds have been sampled, but that's it. Everything from looks to the feel of play has been created from knowledge of the original trilogy alone.

Bomber Games, you are insane. There is no doubt about this. If you weren't insane to initially undertake this project, you must be now that you've completed it. But dear God, we applaud you for it, you magnificent bastards.

I must play this! I really hope Sega doesn't go all berserk and attempt to dispose of this.

What about that other game? The "hardest" game ever? I wanna be the guy. It is an insanely hard game.

I played previous versions of this. Total dream project for me, if only I could get it on a handheld. Wish Sega could have done something like this. They just don't have the talent these days though.

As a man who played nothing but SoR 1,2 and 3 when it was new on the Genesis, I can tell you that this man wins my heart. I can't clap for long enough to show my appreciation for this utterly awesome remake. It goes far beyond my hopes for a remade SoR; Forget the moon, these guys shot for fuckin' Mars and made it!

That's a truly impressive feat of obsession. Hats of to the developers.

That's awesome! Sega probably couldn't do that nowadays to save their lives! (unfortunately)

Yeah, now that you mention it, someone did forget to close their comms programs before they started capturing, didn't they? And you can get the download from the link in the story.

@Brizee yeah me and my mate just noticed that too! Having been playing on old mega drives again on the mega drive collection for PS3 my housemates and I have been getting a lot of practice on the first two streets of rage games (we find the third one a bit shite...) and having showed them this we were all just sat here kinda drooling over this. It looks incredible!

I knew one of the composer's that did music for this very early on. Awesome stuff I'm psyched they pulled through, this is gonna be great. This is the start of things to come I can guarantee that! Boss mix in the 2nd video is awesome, but...am I mad or is the MSN Messenger sound effect in there?
  • Mooshon - April 5, 2011 3:41 p.m.

  • JD_Method - April 5, 2011 3:38 p.m.

They've finished it? Awesome! I've played previous versions of this Streets of Rage remake and it's great. I was born a bit too late to own the original games so it's brilliant to have this.
