Game music of the day: The Adventures of Bayou Billy

Game: The Adventures of Bayou Billy

Song: "Street & Swamp Fightin'" (Stages 1, 3, 6, 8 BGM)

Composers: Atsushi Fujio, Hidenori Maezawa, Jun Funahashi, Shinkon Ogura

Brett's piece on Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow got me in the Konami mood, but I wanted to go for something that doesn't get enough love. We've always had a lot of Castlevania and Metal Gear Solid mixes at OC ReMix, but The Adventures of Bayou Billy (known as Mad City in Japan) also had an incredible, energetic soundtrack by Atsushi Fujio, Shinkon Ogura, Jun Funahashi, and Hidenori Maezawa (most famous for the classic soundtrack to Contra).

A thinly-veiled NES take on Crocodile Dundee set in New Orleans, the game features Bayou Billy whippin' punks, shootin' thugs, and dodgin' gators in the quest to rescue his lady Annabelle from the evil bastard Godfather Gordon. You can tell Gordon's evil, because his hat obscures his eyes AND he smokes (as all evil people do).

Tales of Bayou Billy's gameplay being hard as hell are legendary; it was so broken that I barely ever got past the first stage. But how can you hate a game with first stage music that awesome?

Above: Bayou Billy's music for Stage 4 is just as catchy

Above: What kind of ride would you cruise with to the Stage 5/Car Drivin' music?

Above: "The 'muy caliente' chorus in Bayou Billy's soundtrack just blew me away. I needed to remix this, badly." - Evil Horde

The most ignorant, hated criticism I've heard about OC ReMix is "it's all techno." That's entirely false. (Besides, you wouldn't mean "techno," you'd mean electronica. And that's STILL false.) Those who say that don't listen to all of our community's music. A great example of OCR's genre diversity is Finnish OC ReMixer Evil Horde stylishly melting your face off with his intense Bayou Billy jazz mix, "El Lagarto." When it comes to Konami game music, it's almost all worth a look. Crack the whip on anyone who dares to tell you otherwise.

Good to see the great game music is kept up even when Brett is off. The only people that know more about game music than Brett are OC remix

I remember getting pretty far in this game. Not sure if I beat it. This game was extremely difficult. The driving stages were a nightmare.
  • Tenfey - October 12, 2010 11:15 a.m.

I've had this game since I was a kid, and I don't believe I've ever beaten the first stage. Music is pretty ballin though.

In my mind "Street & Swamp Fightin" is the perfect 8 bit song i could listen to it for hours on loop

The guitar in the Remix at the end is pretty damn sick.
  • batmanboy11 - October 11, 2010 10:40 p.m.

GamesRadar + OC ReMix = A tent being pitched in my shorts.

This was one that you really needed the light gun for, like Snatcher on Sega CD. Trying to play the shooting parts without it was too hard.
  • foxyexplosion - October 11, 2010 9:34 p.m.

This game was way too hard, to this day I have yet to beat it
  • flabslapper - October 11, 2010 9:27 p.m.

yo man as always thanks for the Game Music of the Day, I know that you know that I know that you know I appreciate this, but I know that you know that i know a girl just likes to hear it every now and again. Anywho you ever see Spoony One's review of this game? Good shit man
  • CH3BURASHKA - October 11, 2010 9:22 p.m.

I have a weird associations old game names that prevented me from trying them out at the time. I was always disgusted by ToeJam and Earl, and I always thought that Bayou Billy was about a frog, and thus wasn't really interested. Great track, upbeat and all.
  • SUCKxITxEZ - October 11, 2010 9:19 p.m.

a metal remix of the stage 4 music would be tight
  • marioman50 - October 11, 2010 9:11 p.m.

  • ventanger - October 11, 2010 9:09 p.m.

Surprised they didn't change it to Billy yelling "OH-CAR!" for the US version...
  • UntarrTheBeefy - October 11, 2010 9:05 p.m.

Oh my god, I can remember playing this game when I was a kid. Never got past the first stage either. But man, does this take me way back. Remix ain't half bad either.
