Leonardo Di Caprio and heavy breathing star in first trailer for The Revenant

Fox has dropped the first teaser for one of the year's big Christmas releases, Alejandro González Iñárritu's The Revenant. Leonardo Di Caprio and Tom Hardy co-star in the period piece thriller that appears to be taking a complete 180 from the director's last film Birdman.

Di Caprio plays Hugo Glass, a legendary explorer and fur trapper, whose typical day of hunting goes awry when he is mauled by a grizzly bear. Rather than take care of him, Glass' comrade and friend John Fitzgerald, played by Hardy, opts to rob him and leave him for dead. In an effort to exact his revenge, Glass treks over 3000 miles of the American wilderness. Check out the teaser below.

The cinematography is absolutely jaw-dropping, as the bleak landscapes roll out before Di Caprio. He looks to be in his element here; growing out his beard, getting up close with nature and going full-on method. Could this be the year the Academy finally notices him? Co-starring Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter and Lukas Haas The Revenant opens in select US theaters on December 25, followed by a widespread release on January 8, 2016. UK audiences can catch it on January 15.
