Keiji Inafune - the father of Mega Man,
former Capcom bigwig, and all-around game designing all-star - has announced a
cartoony pirate RPG for the 3DS. Entitled Kaio: King of Pirates, the game will
be the first full title to spawn from Inafune's newly formed studio,
Intercept, and is expected to arrive next year.
Inafune revealed the project with a cut-scene teaser trailer and a bounty of early images. Is this Happy Feet meets Pirates of the Caribbean? Wind Waker meets Prinny? You decide:
“The story is set in the adventurous great ocean where heroes fight for their ambition, justice, and their lives,” describes Inafune on the game's official website, adding, “What I want [for] KAIO to visualize is 'human appeal' itself. What is beyond the 'right and wrong' or the 'good and bad'? What is waiting in the end?”
Kaio: King of Pirates will be co-produced by Marverlous AQL, a recently merged company comprised of Marvelous Entertainment, AQ Interactive and Liveware. It is reported to be the first in a trilogy of games that will eventually star over 300 characters.
For now, Intercept's debut title is targeting a Japan release. However, judging by Marvelous AQL's English subtitled trailer above, there is interest in bringing western gamers on board. For now, non-Japanese 3DS owners will have to make do with the trailer and these promo screenshots:
