Say what you will about the prequel movies, but Qui Gon cutting through that door with a lightsaber was the coolest shit. Also rather than levelution it would probably work better with BFBC2 levels of building destruction. Then with that they should have Jedi as a class that doesn't have any ranged weaponry beyond a short range lightsaber throw. I suppose they could also have force lighting that has very limited range or a force push meant to buy you some time to get closer but at range a Jedi should obviously be disadvantaged for balancing purposes. Would you rather: Son of Luke. With Luke as your father and Anakin as your grandpa you're basically guaranteed three things. The unfortunate loss of one of your hands, an awesome robot hand, and being riddled with midichlorians. I'll basically be a Jedi master by age ten.

Never say midichlorians again. Everything else you said though I agree with. I think your idea of balancing the jedi class by severely limiting its range and options is a good one. Maybe 'light side' could have a heal ability (like 1/3 health every 2 mins or something) and the dark side could have lightning (v. short range burst of lightning which does like 1/3 health damage of stuns for 0.5 secs every 30 secs or so; kind like jedi outcast level 1 lightning) and both have a force push. It would be nice to differentiate them a bit. Alternately rather than limiting the cooldown perhaps you could have a force meter which allows say 2 or 3 uses of a force power in quick succession before depleting and takes like 30 seconds to completely fill up again (also like jedi oucast)? That way they are pretty much useless at range but have the potential in the hands of a skilled played to take out a whole room of guys or escape a hairy situation.

Han solo seems like the kind of dad who'd forget your birthday.

But he'd make it up to you in the coolest ways.
