The first official still from Terrence Malick’s Knight Of Cups has been released online via The Hollywood Reporter , to tie in with the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
Footage from the film - which stars Christian Bale and Natalie Portman, as well as an eclectic cast that includes Cate Blanchett, Teresa Palmer and Antonio Banderas - will be shown to potential investors at the fest.
Said to be a treatise on fame and excess, the first image doesn’t give much away with regard to the secrecy-shrouded plot. With Bale frolicking in the surf, while Portman wanders along the shore, this first glimpse is much lighter than what we would've expected from Malick and Bale.
If you squint, it could even be a still from a romcom. Being a Malick film, though, we'd expect something more philosophically searching than your average Friday night fare.

Knight Of Cups is currently awaiting a release date, although it’s expected to open at some point during 2013.
