James Cameron to direct Cleopatra?

Box-office Titan James Cameron is rumoured to be considering directing Angelina Jolie in Cleopatra .

There Will Be Blood producer Scott Rudin bought the rights to the novel Cleopatra: A Life, by Pulitzer-prize winning author Stacy Schiff (to be published next month) and Sony is apparently gearing up for a PG-13 take on it, to be shot in 3D.

The "brilliant" script has been written by Brian Helgeland ( L.A. Confidential ).

Cameron already has a busy schedule lined up - he is preparing to write Avatar 2 , and is producing Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness , as well as a 3D remake of Fantastic Voyage , so there's no telling when this will materialise.

Whatever your thoughts on Avatar , there is no denying that the visual scope of it was spectacular, and the thought of seeing Cameron's interpretation of a living, breathing ancient Egypt, in 3D, is mouthwatering stuff.

The original 1963 film, starring Elisabeth Taylor in the title role and Richard Burton as Mark Anthony, famously went completely over budget, ballooning from $2 million to $44 million, practically bankrupting 20th Century Fox.

With Cameron behind the lens, and Jolie starring, will this put the epic-to-end-all-epics to shame?
