Last weekend, the WGA strike managed to reduce the usually swanky Golden Globe Awards to the sort of glamour usually reserved for FA Cup fixture announcements. But will the same happen to the Oscars? Not if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has any say, it won’t.
According to Variety , the bods – and producer Gil Cates – are apparently pushing ahead with plans for two shows – the regular, star-studded bash and a stripped down alternative that should still provide more of an actual show than the neutered globes, with Hollywood heavyweights providing their own scripted moments. Can’t wait to see how that works out…
But one group might end up joining any possible writers’ picket as the entrants for the Foreign Film award have been announced, and two hugely popular, critically lauded entries are off the list. Animated biography Persepolis and this year’s Palme d’Or winner at Cannes (Romanian abortion drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) are both slighted.
