Sacha Baron Cohen has landed the lead role of Freddie Mercury in a biopic about the infamous Queen frontman.
It marks the Borat and Brüno star’s first high profile lead in a film since his turns as the outrageous mock doc characters, which he shepherded from the small to the big screen in 2006 and 2009.
It could also be considered a chance for the actor/showman to dabble in more high brow affairs, considering the pedigree of people involved in the Mercury flick.
Who? Namely scriptwriter Peter Morgan, whose effusive scribbles have previously transformed Helen Mirren into Queen Elizabeth II and Frank Langella into Richard Nixon.
Deadline report that the film will track Queen’s beginnings and lead up to their 1985 Live Aid appearance – which many consider to be their finest hour.
Will Cohen be spending time in the studio to record his own versions of Mercury and co’s songs? Considering the man’s recognised as something of a master chameleon, we wouldn’t be surprised.
