Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set to restore one of the original cast to its ensemble, with Orlando Bloom announcing at D23 that his character Will Turner will be returning to the fold for the fifth film in the franchise.
The last time we saw the character, he had assumed the captaincy of the Flying Dutchman, allowing him to see his beloved Elizabeth only once every ten years. Whether or not he is still bound by those constraints remains to be seen, but we’d imagine there’s a loophole somewhere on the horizon…
Bloom sat out the last episode in the series, the uneven On Stranger Tides, and will hopefully provide some welcome balance to Jack Sparrow’s swashbuckling antics. As loveable as Johnny Depp’s character is, there’s still a feeling that his shtick works best in a supporting capacity than when he’s the leading man.
Bloom will join fellow old-stagers Geoffrey Rush, Kevin R. McNally, and Stephen Graham for the next film, while new additions to the cast include Javier Bardem, Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites. Directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will open in the UK and US on July 7, 2017.
