Sony planning female-centric 21 Jump Street spin-off

Sony has expanded universes on the brain! Not satisfied with developing a sprawling new Ghostbusters franchise and potentially mashing up 21 Jump Street with Men In Black, the latest rumour has the studio exploring the possibility of a female-led Jump Street spin-off.

According to Tracking Board, Sony is working on a new film in which two female police officers follow in the footsteps of Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill for a new undercover mission. It was a concept touched upon in the first film, when Dakota Johnson and Rye Rye popped up as a rival pair of cops, although its unlikely that they will be the specific pair involved in the new film.

The report claims that the studio already has Broad City writers Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs working on an early version of a script. Nothing has been confirmed by Sony as yet.

Tracking Board has a slightly patchy track record with this kind of rumour, but given Sony's recent moves in this field, it certainly doesn't seem beyond the realms of possibility. Watch this space…
