New details for Blade Runner sequel

While promotional material for Prometheus has come in waves over the last few months, it's all gone a bit quiet over Ridley Scott's other big sci-fi project, the potential sequel to Blade Runner .

However, new details have emerged today, chief of which is the news that original Blade Runner screenwriter Hampton Fancher is currently in talks to return for round two.

An official press release confirms that Fancher is in discussions to pen a sequel, with Scott already in place to fill the director's chair for a second time.

"The filmmakers are also revealing for the first time that the much-anticipated project is intended to be a sequel to the renowned original," says the blurb. "The filmmakers would reveal only that the new story will take place some years after the first film concluded."

Still more intriguing is the news that the sequel will boast a female lead. "We have a very good take on it," said Sir Ridley himself of the forthcoming sequel, "and we'll definitely be featuring a female protagonist."

Whether or not Harrison Ford will also return remains unclear, with Scott having played down rumours that the star had been in talks to take the lead. However, there's still plenty of time for that to change, with filming unlikely to begin until 2013. Never say never, eh Harrison?
