Jackass 3D crash lands on its feet

Jackass 3D

Jackass returned to cinemas this weekend with a third entry released in 3D, and drew crowds to the tune of $50m as it seized the number one spot from The Social Network .

Far from being seen as a mere cynical attempt to cash in on the 3D craze, the stomach-testing flick has received fair praise for its innovative use of the medium, which only served to make the winces wincier, the ows owier, and the gross stuff ten times grosser.

Not only that, but the boys gone wild doc earned itself the honour of having the biggest October weekend ever, thanks in no small part to a massive haul of $21m on its first day of release.

Other new opener Red also fared well, debuting at number two with $22.5m, while The Social Network slipped to third ($11m), Secretariat slid one place down to fourth ($9.5m) and Life As We Know It rounded out the top five with $9.2m.

The rest of the top ten resembled a shaken-up version of last week’s box office, as hoot-a-plenty Zack Snyder film Legend Of The Guardians dove to sixth place ($4.3m), The Town hit seventh ($4m), My Soul To Take took up residence in eighth ($3.1m), Easy A dropped to ninth ($2.6m) and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps went from seventh to tenth ($2.3m).
