Concept art for sci-fi John Carter revealed online

A couple of concept art shots from Disney’s in-production sci-fi John Carter (previously John Carter Of Mars ) have been revealed online.

An adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel, the film stars Taylor Kitsch as the eponymous hero, who is transported to Mars and becomes embroiled in a war there.

Pixar director Andrew Stanton ( Finding Nemo , Wall-E ) is directing. He recently spoke with Hero Complex about the film, revealing it won’t have a presence at this year’s Comic-Con.

“I think what it was is the perception that it’s getting harder and harder to stand out amid the din,” he reasons. “We want to control how and what is being seen and the way it is presented.

“So much stuff now is just spit out so fast and the churn of it all. You almost gain nothing by talking about things really early in this day and age.”

The director also cited “ Apocaplyto and Rome and even things like Shogun and Lawrence of Arabia ” as references for his film's strange new world.

John Carter opens March 2012, and also stars Lynn Collins, Samantha Morton, Mark Strong, Bryan Cranston, Thomas Hayden Church, and Willem Dafoe.
