Chloe Grace Moretz fights the alien apocalypse in The 5th Wave trailer

The post-apocalyptic trend continues with The 5th Wave, the latest in a long line of young adult adaptations featuring a bunch of teenagers who must survive a perilous, dystopian world. This particular story charts a series of attacks from unknown intruders who strike our planet with the intent of wiping out humanity - and the fifth assault promises the worst devastation yet.

While it's still several months from release, the first full trailer has now arrived online. As this is based on a young adult novel, the heroine is a 16-year old named Cassie (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) who takes on the task of stopping the fifth wave while hunting down her long lost brother. Her efforts to prevent a worldwide catastrophe certainly don't look easy...

If you're feeling a little fragile knowing that The Hunger Games comes to an end later this year, this looks set to plug the gap. Switching out the Capitol's tyranny for the wrath of alien attackers known as The Others, it's got the potential to spawn a whole new franchise. And seeing as it's the first in author Rick Yancey's trilogy of novels, there's plenty more stories to mine for sequels. Directed by J. Blakeson, The 5th Wave opens on January 15, 2016 in the US and January 22, 2016 in the UK.
