Steven Spielberg to direct Ready Player One

Ready Player One looks to have landed itself the dream occupant for its director’s chair, with Deadline reporting that Steven Spielberg has signed on to helm the new film.

Based on the novel of the same name by Ernest Cline, the film is set in 2044 and will follow a teenager attempting to tackle a fiendish VR game that has remained unbeatable for several decades. Why do people keep trying to crack it? The developer has promised to hand over his empire to anybody who does…

The game itself is based around the miscellany of 80s pop culture, which would seemingly make Spielberg a perfect fit to direct. Indeed, many of the director’s films are referenced in the book, making for lots of potential in-jokes…

Just how the film will navigate the many rights issues involved in its use of 80s references remains to be seen, but Warner will be confident that Spielberg’s involvement will help sell the movie when approaching negotiations. No release date has been confirmed as yet, but Ready Player One is expected to be Spielberg’s next project once he has finished work on The BFG.
