Shawn Levy has signed on to direct a new take on Frankenstein for Fox, quashing any hope that the James Cameron-produced Fantastic Voyage would be his next.
The as-yet-untitled project is one of many new takes on Mary Shelley's classic text that are in the works, and it looks like this one has just nudged itself into pole position.
Max (son of John) Landis has been working on the script, which 'has been described as a sci-fi take on the traditional Mary Shelley story, focusing on themes of friendship and redemption.'
A little odd, considering Shelley's story was actually science fiction (unless we happened to have missed some major medical advances recently). Perhaps this means it'll be a future-set version?
Levy's best known for competent but uninspiring hits such as Night At The Museum , Cheaper By The Dozen and Date Night , but early word on robot-boxing flick Real Steel has been promising.
Among the other Frankenstein projects in various stages of pre-production are graphic novel adaptation Wake The Dead , I, Frankenstein and This Dark Endeavor: The Apprenticeship Of Victor Frankenstein .
Guillermo del Toro also has a take on the classic story on his ever-growing to-do list.
There's currently no word on when we can expect Levy's Frankenstein to hit cinemas.
