Guillermo Del Toro pitches awesome Jabba the Hutt spinoff

As the cinematic Star Wars universe continues to expand, plenty of contemporary filmmakers are joining Lucasfilm's fan-favorite property. Phil Lord and Chris Miller recently boarded to steer a young Han Solo standalone movie, and now another major genre name wants in; Guillermo Del Toro.

At San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, the horror helmer pitched his idea for a mob-centric Jabba the Hutt prequel movie. Before revealing his origin tale for the Tattooine baddie, he was careful to precede it with a caution: “This is not real. This is me as a fat geek just geeking out and talking about it," he told Yahoo Movies.

“I would do the sort of Godfather saga that Jabba the Hutt had to go through to gain control," he went on to say. "One, because it’s the character that looks the most like me, and I like him. I love the idea of a Hutt type of mafia, a very complex coup. I just love the character.”

Taking into account the vast, sprawling universe Lucasfilm has planned for the galaxy far, far away, the idea of a Jabba solo outing isn't merely blue sky thinking -- it could easily slot into the grand scheme of things. If we're getting Han and Boba Fett's standalones, why not one for the gluttinous villain?
