First set of images arrive from Poltergeist reboot

They’re heeeeeere... again.

Thirty years after Tobe Hooper’s original Poltergeist chiller landed, those malevolent spirits are back for a reboot. Thanks to USA Today, we’ve got our first look at the movie in a series of new images. Check them out below:

Directed by Gil Kenan (Monster House) and written by David Lindsay-Abaire (Rise of the Guardians), the modernised take will follow Sam Rockwell and Rosemary Dewitt’s suburban family as they become terrorised by unseen entities.

Judging by that handful of stills, those mischievous ghosts will be up to the same type of behavior as before; luring youngsters into television sets and using clowns as instruments of evil.

Perhaps the latter aspect is what prompted Kenan himself to admit that “The film is super-scary. And it's scary on its own terms."

Producer Sam Raimi, another iconic horror meister, offered up his reasons for remaking the classic horror:

“The original film commented on how we’ve let television get out of control, babysitting our kids. It’s only gotten worse with the handheld portable devices. Screens are everywhere.”

Check back tomorrow for the first Poltergeist trailer, before the movie hits cinemas on July 24th.
