Tweets Of The Week

The Twitterverse goes Doctor Who crazy, but there’s some room for Ashes To Ashes and Kick-Ass too

Matt Smith was finally unveiled as the “elegantly clumsy” (thank you Steven Moffat for that soundbite) eleventh Doctor at a lavish press launch in Cardiff (if anything in Cardiff can be lavish): “ DW was terrific fun. Matt and Karen make a very kooky pair (in character) and were very centered folk in real life,” Twittered Ashes To Ashes man (and rumoured season six writer) Matthew Graham . BBC News’s resident Who brainbox Lizo Mzimba was also waxing lyrical: “Eleventh Hour whizzes by. Lots of fun!” he Twittered, before adding, “Ooh. New series trailer. Spitfires dog fighting in space. Cybermen! Stonehenge. Roman centurions. Weeping Angel!!!!” We think he liked it. Meanwhile, Doctor Who: The Writer’s Tale co-scribe Ben Cook was on hand with more snippets of season five goodness: “Random (non-spoilery) things I loved = Big Ben. The Eye. ‘And stay out!’ Mr Moore. Fishfingers. ‘DUCK!’ Internet history. The roof scene.” Paul Cornell , writer of season three’s “Human Nature” and long-time Who fan came to a realisation this week about young Mr Smith: “I can honestly say to Matt Smith ‘I was in Dr Who fandom before you were born.’ Remind me not to!” We will, Paul. Fellow Who scribe James Moran wasn’t thinking about such mortality-troubling things though: “It's fair to say that I’m ridiculously excited about Doctor Who coming back soon. I may do an involuntary wee.”

Across the pond, Marvel big man Joe Quesada finally saw Kick-Ass and liked what he saw: “Just back from the Kick Ass screening. Pay attention as this will soon be a much used statement about the movie, ‘It lives up to its name!’” He later Twittered, “Caught a bug at ECCC and just woke up from an afternoon fever dream. Mark Millar was accepting an Academy Award. How do I make it stop?!?” Just let things run their natural course, Joe. Anyway, they wouldn’t let him anywhere near the Oscars...

So, what else have SF’s Twitterers been up to? Jane Espensen has been getting irritated by people who talk about her old show while knowing nothing about it: "People who say the one thing they don’t get about Buffy is how she became a vampire have more than one thing they don't get about Buffy,” she moaned. What else? Oh, Simon Pegg finished filming of his Burke and Hare film by acting opposite a genuine film legend: “Just shot scenes with Sir Christopher Lee. 89 years old and insisted on sticking around for off-camera lines. What an absolute gentleman”. And Misha Collins was having harrassment issues: “Just got off a plane. The guy sitting next to me, i think his name was @jumblejim kept stroking my thigh & saying ‘you’re so firm.’”

Finally, Ashes To Ashes ’s final season has finally been given an airdate - Friday 2 April. Matthew Graham was appearing polite about the slot (is Ashes really a Friday night programme? Discuss): “To All - I am sanguine about an April 2nd airdate. I love this final series and if people watch it as well then all the better. Enjoy. xx”. Dean Andrews who plays Ray though was, er, less pleased: “Sanguine is one word for it my friend. I have many others for it...” Why BBC schedulers would want to get on the wrong side of Ray Carling, I don't know...
