Most unlikely Revelation of the Month
This is not the joke. The following sentence was discovered buried deep within a Hollywood Reporter article about MGM greenlighting movies like there’s no tomorrow: "a big-budget rebuild of RoboCop, which director Darren Aronofsky among others has recently been in to discuss.” Sorry? Just run that one by us again: "a big-budget rebuild of RoboCop, which director Darren Aronofsky among others has recently been in to discuss.” Excuse us while we just put the Earth back on its correct axis.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that the man who gave us such unremitting weirdness as The Fountain and Pi, as well officially the most harrowing film ever made, Requiem for a Dream, will necessarily end up giving us a remake of a movie about a cybernetic cop. But it does seems to suggest that MGM are prepared to think outside the box when it comes to selecting a director, rather than just churn out some by-the-numbers action flick helmed by the chief focus puller on Iron Man.
Whedon’s Cabin Given Green Light
Following on from yesterday’s Link-A-Mania story , MGM has now officially given the green light to The Cabin in the Woods. Joss Whedon will write and produce, with Drew (Cloverfield) Goddard writing and making his debut as director, reports Variety .
Elfquest Heads for the Big Screen
Infamous comic strip Elfquest, which added sex and violence to Lord of the Rings-style fantasy in the ’70s, is set for a big screen adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter . Rawson Thurber, previously best known for his scripts for the two Dodgeball movies, will make his debut as director. The Elfquest comics, about a tribe of not-very-fey Elves called the Wolfriders trying to unite Elves against oppression, was originally self published by Wendy and Richard Pini in 1978 and has since been published by both Marvel and DC. So, what’s the movie’s USP going to be, we wonder? The first T&A faery folk movie? There are some Legolas slash fiction writers out there getting very excited about the idea…
Peter Berg Promises a More Muscular Dune
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his current box office number one smash Hancock, director Berg speaks briefly about his ideas for remaking Dune: "There is a sense in the book that the commodity ( we think he means spice – ed ) is driving the train. But I don't want to hang the story on that. I read the book and really liked it. What I never saw in Lynch's film was a really strong adventure story. There's a much more muscular time to be had there.” So, any bets on Vin Diesel as Paul Artreides squaring it off against The Rock as Baron Harkonnen? Or are we taking his words a bit literally?
