Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - Dark Edition, Barry Sloane, is it a remake, crossplay and everything we know so far

This E3 2019 saw Call of Duty: Modern Warfare take to the stage for new info on Spec Ops mode, characters, controversy and more. This all new reboot isn't Modern Warfare 4 but instead reimagines and restarts the franchise in a modern setting, with a new actor taking on the role of Captain Price and new, more testing, conflict situations to push you to the edges of right and wrong as you fight to save the world.

To find out more about Modern Warfare, the story, multiplayer and Spec Ops, and the numerous collector edition we have it all.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release date

Modern Warfare release date

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare release date is October 25, 2019, which was revealed with the announcement trailer. Barring any sort of development disaster between then and now and then we should all be sitting down with Captain Price this October.

Modern Warfare Spec Ops mode brings back a classic

We've only seen a single screen of a Juggernaut but Modern Warfare Spec Ops is back. We knew there was a co-op mode on the way, and Spec Ops was the rumour, but now it's confirmed. While little more info than the confirmation has been revealed we did previously know that "the single-player storyline goes directly into the co-op storyline," according to campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff. While studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki has said it's a "unified experience". That's interesting in of itself for closure on the plot but does it's mean you have to finish the story first, or risk spoilers by hitting Spec Ops before?

Barry Sloane is the new Captain Price

Barry Sloane is the new Captain Price

An all new game means an all new Captain Price in Modern Warfare. With original actor Billy Murray currently 77 years old, new face Barry Sloane has taken on the role. The new actor has approached the role with no lack of reverence, referring to OG Murray as "the Bedrock" of the character.

Sloane is well placed to play the role having previously undergone some basic Navy SEAL training as part of the History Channel's SIX show. So he's well placed to fully perform and mo-cap the character, making this feel like a similar recasting decision to Kratos in the recent God of War reboot.

Is the new Modern Warfare a remake?

Is the new Modern Warfare a remake?

Short answer: no. This is a whole new game remaining the core concepts of the original for today. Developer Infinity Ward prefer to call it a reimagining rather than a reboot but you get the idea - it's an all new game transplanting the 'idea' of Modern Warfare into a 2019 setting.

From what's been shown that includes a terrorist attack in Piccadilly and an SAS assault on a London Townhouse. There's also a section where you play as a child escaping a Russian attack on a middle Eastern town. It's stern stuff with two ex-Naughty Dog leads, studio narrative director Taylor Kurosaki and campaign gameplay director Jacob Minkoff, in charge of the single player and promising to make the player feels morally grey about what they're doing in game. We've got a full breakdown of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare story and levels if you want to know more.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare crossplay is happening

Modern Warfare crossplay

Infinity Ward is promising Call of Duty: Modern Warfare crossplay for both multiplayer and co-op. Of course it's not actually given away any information on either mode, just that crossplay is the plan. It'll be a controller matched system so controller players will be put in lobbies with other controller players and so on. The idea seems to be to "unite the community" although use of the word "console" rather than specific platforms means it's a waiting game to see if PC, Xbox and PS4 all get to play.

There's no Call of Duty: Modern Warfare season pass

Modern Warfare season pass

Another interesting part of the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare multiplayer offering is there's no season pass. According to Infinity Ward the studio is "eliminating the traditional season pass, so that we can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players." That's a good thing obviously, but the money's got to come some some where so presumably there's going to be plenty of cosmetic options - the following Operator Packs look like a good example of what to expect.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare editions include a Dark, Precision and Operator version

There are currently three Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Editions you could potentially buy. Four if you include an enhanced version of the Operator edition. Each includes a different range of in-game rewards and extras, so let's take a look at them all in order.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Dark Edition

This is the big one, in price at least. The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Dark Edition has been listed at $199.99 in an accidental Gamestop leak. Unfortunately, the price is all the retailer gave away. At that price it's either going to include some sort of statue or fancy box, or maybe, just maybe, another set of night vision googles, like the ones included in the Modern Warfare 2 collector edition. Back in 2009 that package cost $149, so with inflation it's in the right ball park.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Precision Edition

Call of Duty Modern Warfare Precision Edition

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Precision Edition is the next option down from the Dark Edition at $99. Again it appears to have leaked but also included a list of what was included. For one hundred bucks you can expect to get this:

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare game
  • Steelbook
  • KontrolFreek Modern Warfare branded Performance Thumbsticks
  • KontrolFreek Modern Warfare branded Controller Skin
  • Custom in-game Tactical Knife
  • “All Ghillied Up” Operator Pack
  • “Crew Expendable” Operator Pack
  • “War Pig” Operator Pack
  • C.O.D.E. Animated Calling Card

As we'll find out in a moment it looks like the more basic Operator Edition with a steelbook, some branded controller bits and a C.O.D.E. Animated Calling Card, which is basically a fancy term for the player banners you can choose in multiplayer.

The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Operator Edition is the most basic 'extra' edition. As well as the game you'll also get:

  • Custom in-Game Tactical Knife
  • “All Ghillied Up” Operator Pack
  • “Crew Expendable” Operator Pack
  • “War Pig” Operator Pack
  • 3,000 Call of Duty Points

The Operator Enhanced edition adds 3,000 Call of Duty Points to the bundle, presumably this games multiplayer currency.

The Operator Packs each contain "a themed Operator skin, cosmetic weapon variant, and additional bonus content". While it doesn't seem to be clarified I'm assuming it's for the multiplayer/co-op component of the game with each pack offering "three themed Operator skins [that] utilize three cosmetic weapon variants (one per Operator) from some of the most popular and iconic Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare missions of the past." That includes "backstory, nationality, character dialogue, character skins and cosmetic customization options".

Here's what you get on that front:

“All Ghillied Up” Operator Pack

Named for the infamous flashback campaign mission in the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, where you, playing as Lieutenant John Price (prior to being made Captain), must utilize camouflage and sniping tactics as you encroach the outskirts of the Ukranian city of Pripyat.

  • Operator Name: Grinch
  • Themed Operator Skin: Full sniper ghillie suit.
  • Cosmetic Weapon Variant: Bolt-action sniper rifle, in camouflage with additional netting and suppressor, and what seems to be coordinates scratched on the surface of the weapon above the trigger, near the bolt carrier.

“Crew Expendable” Operator Pack

Paying homage to the second campaign mission from the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, where you, playing as Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish, board an Estonian ship in the Bering Strait, as part of a clandestine raid by British Special Forces in an attempt to locate and obtain a rogue nuclear device.

  • Operator Name: Otter
  • Themed Operator Skin: Special operations with gas mask.
  • Cosmetic Weapon Variant: Short-barreled pump-action shotgun designed “for close encounters”; in fact, the phrase is scratched into the stock. The weapon also comes with oil and surface markings.

“War Pig” Operator Pack

Sharing the name with the Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare mission where you, playing as Marine Sergeant Paul Jackson, lead a charge to push back an enemy counterattack and secure a tank (the “War Pig” in question).

  • Operator Name: Wyatt
  • Themed Operator Skin: Ground infantry Desert camouflage with tac vest.
  • Cosmetic Weapon Variant: Pistol with a lightweight custom trigger, flared magwell, grip with custom stippling, accessory rail (for mounting lasers or flashlights), and “War Pig” etched into the slide.
