Battlefield 1's decision to return to a more historical setting surprised a lot of people when it was announced, but clearly hit a nerve. The announcement trailer hit a record number of likes, for example, and the more people saw of its WW1 war games the more the hype grew.
Recently, while taking a look at Battlefield 1's They Shall Not Pass DLC , we spoke to creative director Lars Gustavsson and asked if he thought Battlefield 1's direction might start a trend, and see other shooters go back in time to WW1, WW2 or even further? Something that seems very relevant now that it looks like Call of Duty will return to World War 2 this year.
Gustavsson told us, "I think it’s just like Usain Bolt, if you’re running your race, yes, you should be aware of what other people are doing but you need to focus on your lane and do your race. If someone would go to the same era I welcome them. We’re all gamers and Battlefield wouldn’t be what it was without all the great game makers out there. Since that's what inspires us, that’s what we play when we get home. I think it’s healthy competition and inspiration [which] is just good for everyone. It’s not a negative. But we’ll see. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens in times to come."
Call of Duty's return to WW2 hasn't been officially confirmed yet, but numerous websites are claiming corroboration from different sources. We'll likely find out soon if it's true as the pre-E3/start of the year COD wagon is due to roll soon. If it turns out to be true then there could be some very healthy competition indeed later this year.
And, if you're not convinced, read why shooters are due a return to WW2 here.
