Is this the noisiest d-pad in the world?

This is the NEOGEO X Gold Limited Edition. Quite a mouthful. But it's also quite an earful, especially if you're using the handheld unit for some 'quiet' gaming time. Guaranteed to annoy your parents/housemates (and it'll drive any cockroaches mad), the microswitched innards of the handheld's d-pad are incredibly noisy. We've made a short comparison video to demonstrate. So what do you reckon - is this the noisiest d-pad ever?

It just might well be. But I rarely use mine on the go, and just pretend I have a Neo Geo under the TV (as the 13 year old me always wanted) with it mounted in the docking station.

Clearly, you have never used a Neo Geo pocket.

I actually own one :) It's not as loud as this.

That is the sound of micro switches. If you know anything about old fashioned arcade sticks then you know thats a good thing. Its a shame the device is just bad, the screen is the wrong aspect ratio for the games its playing also the games are emulated, the built in games are just roms and so are the games on the modified SD cards it uses.

It's like a mechanical keyboard--which in and of itself is noisy, but it stays in the house and is gotten over quite quickly. That is... wow.

Neo Geo Pocket was similar but it also had probably one of the best pads in the world. It had micro switches, which are what Arcade sticks have to be precise. Thats why it was easy to play fighting games on it. This is probably why this neo geo system has a noisy pad. It has micro-switches for precise control. Yeah its noisy, but also very accurate.

Is that even a D pad? Their aren't any arrows on it, how will I now which way is left if their isn't an arrow? This handheld is breaking the fabric of space-time. This is madness!

GODDAMNIT! THERE, THERE, THERE! so sorry.

I would immediately return that device for a refund.

Join Gamesradar next week as they determine the nosiest controllers of all time! Seems like an appropriate article for the week of hate

It sounds like switches planned specifically to be noisy. (i.e. the noisier variant of an otherwise quieter switch, like Cherry MX Blue, essentialy an MX Brown with a "clicking" mechanism). Now, I'm all for tactile feedback (especially in gaming), and there's something to be said for aural feedback (imagine your mouse buttons were silent), but for a constantly pressed button on a portable device this is simply an awful choice.
  • ultimatepunchrod - April 17, 2013 6:11 a.m.

That has the potential to get really annoying.
  • bass88 - April 17, 2013 5:36 a.m.

If I sat next to someone on the bus playing that I would punch him.
  • wadesmit - April 17, 2013 6:26 a.m.

You say that, but you'd probably just roll your eyes a lot and grunt melodramatically while you imagine how cool you'd be if you punched them.

    YOU don't say.

Maybe, but I've already smacked somebody across the back of the head for using their phone while I was watching a screening of Alien so Lord knows what I'd do.
