E3 2011: New trailer for XCOM reboot. Release date set for March 6

2K Games’ reboot of the classic X-COM series is now scheduled to release on March 6 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Moving away from the original series’ tactical combat and isometric camera, the reboot will be more of a first-person action game with a weapons and research system that reminded us of BioShock when we previewed it at last year’s E3.

But despite the change in genre from tactical strategy to a more FPS-type game, 2K Games says that it wants to keep the tactical and alien research elements that made the original so great. Set during the 1950s, the latest XCOM trailer teases an incoming alien invasion ready to wreak havoc on the American dream, symbolized by the picturesque era known for its apple pies, two-car garages, and lovely front lawns.

Not happy, guiz. Seriously, turn-based strategy is such a dead genre, and my favorite one.

Not that I'm complaining or anything but wasn't this revealed as a 360 and PC exclusive, when did 2K decide to publish it for the Ps3 as well? Have I been living under a cave?! Captcha: let ogammeel

I definitely just got a lot more interested. Did anyone else read the Revelation Space novels? These aliens remind me a lot of the Inhibitors, and that isn't a bad thing at all.

I'll admit I was one of the people that raged about how this shouldn't be an X-COM game if it's not a tactical squad-based strategy game when I first heard about it. I have to admit that it does look pretty cool so I'll try to keep an open mind about it and just go into it thinking of this more as spinoff rather than an X-COM core game and judge it on its own merits.

hm, the art style looks cool, but I expected more aliens and UFOs then things that escaped from tron.

Alien invasion + Business Casual clad gunmen? I'm in! (or at least I would be if I had a PS3 or had a Windows OS)
  • DrRock - June 4, 2011 1:51 p.m.

I was just thinkin about this game the other day and that I hadn't heard any info on it for sometime. Good to see this didn't get canned and that they're still working on it.

Will this have a linear progression? The original let you tackle things however / whenever the hell you liked. If you aborted a mission, it wouldn't be game over - title screen. It meant you had actually aborted the mission, and would have deal with whatever the implications would be, financial or otherwise. Also, will you have to buy scientists and engineers (with monthly wages)as well as soldiers? I Loved all that base management stuff, and it's one of the reasons X-Com remains one of my all time favourite games.

I've seen game-play videos of the original X-Com series. This looks like a fitting version of it. The original X-Coms were tactical, and the fights took place in suburbs, docksides, etc.. There was also research that would give you better weapons. You also had a home base, and could choose your missions as they came up.

Looks great like LA noire and bioshock had a baby that had an alien pop out its chest.

What happened to the black ooze?
  • Rubberducky - June 4, 2011 1:28 a.m.

Looks like a ton of spiffy stuff coming up and its making me look forward to E3 for the first time ever Anyone else having recaptcha popping up with things like V^m?? Not sure how I'd go about typing some of these in...

That's really cool-looking, although I hope it won't completely abandon the investigative part of it.
  • oufour - June 4, 2011 1:13 a.m.

I really like where this is going. The art style, the idea you have to research enemies before killing them, and the fact the aliens looks so, well alien. They're not just humanoids with laser pistols they really look like something from another planet.
