The writer of Netflix's Daredevil series wanted to make two MCU movies instead, but admits a streaming show was the "right fit": "I think there was concern that it was too adult"
Marvel has evolved quite a bit since then
Drew Goddard says he really wanted to make two Daredevil movies, but that a Netflix series ended up being the right fit.
"I was around when they were doing one of the Avengers, just hanging out, talking about other things, and I was always like, 'Why aren’t you making Daredevil the movie? I don’t understand,'" Goddard said on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast. "I think there was concern that it was too adult. The Marvel model at that time was definitely not a play to adults."
Netflix's Daredevil premiered in 2015, airing around the same time as Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, The Punisher, and the team-up series The Defenders. These shows were much darker and more violent than, say, 2014's Captain America: Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy. In my humble opinion, we wouldn't have gotten the Green Goblin killing Aunt May in Spider-Man: No Way Home back in that era of Marvel movies, let alone Tom Holland's Peter Parker saying, "I'm going to kill him." Things have changed a bit since then, with shows like Echo and Daredevil: Born Again having a TV-MA rating, and Born Again season 2 going on to have some of the gnarliest violence we've seen in Marvel (though Echo did have some neck-snapping and bone-crunching as well).

"The villain of the second movie should be The Punisher. I remember that everyone in the room was like, 'Oh, that’s exciting.' I love anytime two quote-unquote 'heroes' do battle with each other, right? We got to do it. We just did it on Netflix, which I think was the right fit for that."
We did see Matt Murdock appear as Peter's lawyer in Spider-Man: No Way Home, though that's his only MCU movie appearance thus far. With The Punisher appearing in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, however... anything is possible.
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 is airing now on Disney Plus. Be sure to keep up with our Daredevil: Born Again season 2 release schedule. For more, check out our guide to all the upcoming Marvel movies and shows in the works.
