A bit different from the "greatest lengths you went to to get a game," because the answers may not be the same.
Example: I went out of my way to get the first Mortal Kombat, but the first game I remember being completely obsessed with, reading every piece of magazine news I could on it, was Mega Man 2.
Everyone else's answers tomorrow! (Except Chris Shane Tyler Charlie, because they're all dead).

The game I had the biggest obsession with had to have been Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I soaked up every bit of info on that game I could. I knew almost immediately that I would HAVE TO HAVE IT!

The second Turok game. At that time, my parents were completely against violent video games, so when the ad aired, it had my attention to the fullest. I remember playing it at my friends house all of the time... until I was finally able to get it.

Resident Evil, I remember reading about it in Game Informer and then being super excited when it came out. The memory of my dad taking me to buy it at Toys R Us is still vivid, I even remember taking the ticket to get it from the booth. I'm sure there were NES and Genesis games that I really wanted before that, but that was usually more of a wanting it once I saw it at the store kind of thing.

The first game that I absolutely had to have was the Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. It was the first time that I bought a console entirely to play one game.

I HAD to get Halo, I remember the first time I saw it... I was at a LAN party in the dining hall of my college and somebody brought in an Xbox, it was like the first week that it was sold. The town I went to school in got like 50 of them. The thing was BEAUTIFUL! and it sure beat playing C&C 2 that night.

Oh wow...
I can't choose just one so I will do one for each console I have owned:
NES: Legend of Zelda...I rented it as a young'un and scoured everywhere to find it...Found it in a random flea market and was screaming at the top of my lungs, "I must have this!!"
SNES: Super Mario World...no real explanation needed...
N64: Super Mario 64...no real explanation needed...I hope...
N64 Runner Up: WCW/NWO Revenge (I loved wrestling as a kid...)
PS1: Metal Gear Solid...I read EVERYTHING about this gem until its release!!
Gameboy: Pokemon Red
DCAST: Jet Grind Radio...HOLY SHIT!!
PS2: Metal Gear Solid 2...Same as above...
PS2 Runner up: Shadow of the Colossus
Wii: Super Mario Galaxy...I'm all for Mario obviously...Beautiful game and outstanding gameplay...
PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4...Same as above with MGS/MGS2(also MGS3)...I love Kojima-san and his series...

I think my first was Chrono Cross. I was pretty young back then, and I didn't really follow game releases much. But Chrono Trigger is still one of my favorite games of all time, and that was the first sequel I remember ever caring about, so I freaked out about it.

Morrowind, for the original Xbox. Not much of a story here, I just went out and bought it. Woooo. I think there was a line. Wow, exciting. I sold it, and I will regret it forever. That's it.
Oh yeah, and Pokémon, but that's not special, everybody "had" to have it.

Toejam and Earl, the first one. By then I had been playing games for years but something about that game made me actually go out and buy a Genesis and that game. It was a fun game, not the best game ever made, by my friends and I played it for hours. I tried the one on Xbox long ago and it just wasn't the same.

I didn't want to be like every one else and have Halo 3 as their main 360 game and I really like WWll so I just had to have CoD: World at War.

Donkey Kong 64
I had seen advertising for a long time for it, and I got all hyped for it, and exited.. but my parents would not buy it for me, and I had no money to speak of (Thanks Pokemon cards), so I ended up steeling one from gamestop...... Got all exited.... put it in my 64..... got sick of it within the hour..... traded it back in..... I don't remember what I used that credit for thou?... i think it was Turok or something.

Like a few of those above me, my first game that I obsessed over until it came out was Morrowind for the X-Box. I was in love from the moment I read the preview in the final issue of PC Accelerator.
I remember the release date for the console version was pushed back like six times. I would call the EB in my town repeatedly a couple of days before the release date and be told time after time that it had been pushed back again. I remember the release date being somewhere near the start of summer break and the game didn't actualy ship until school was almost back in session.
The amount of times it got pushed back really got to me. I remember it got to a point that every time I was told of the date being changed I would feel Shinning-like sensation of near homicidal insanity wash over me.
To this day I've never seen a game that had so many delays so close together. Anyone else remember that?

Street Fighter 2, for the SNES.
I asked for it for my Birthday, and when I saw my mother with the wrapped up box in the shape of an SNES game box, I let out a girlish shriek of joy and proclaimed that it was 'My Street Fighter!"
She then tried to tell me that it wasn't Street Fighter, but instead Nintendo had somehow managed to release Sonic the Hedgehog on the SNES.
Suffice it to say, I was not convinved, and it turned out to be SF2. =P

Well this is a good question..... It's a tie between 4 i think 1 and 2 were about the same time frame.
The first has to be Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. I begged and plead and cried for it for my birthday. My mom kept saying "you have enough video games" (LOL i had 1 and rented 1 every 2 months compared to over 100 now.) So in the end i had to be good, not start any fights, not talk back, do exactly as i was told immediately. And to my great misfortune, some loser managed to hurt himself sufficiently to get himself a hernia. Of course since i was the school bully he blamed it on me, I bawled and yelled " BUT I DIDNT DO IT I NEVER TOUCHED THE KID PLEASE I WANT ZELDA SO MUCH DONT DO THIS." I got grounded for six months, no TV for a month, and i was told "Your not getting that game." That hurt when you were 5. So July rolls around and i sit saddened by the fact that i would never get the game i wanted so bad! I open all my presents, no Zelda. I was very depressed, i get that last present feeling a self hatred open it up.... I started crying they got me the game, i couldn't believe it, not in a million years. "We saw it how it ripped you to bits so we got you the game."..... It was the gold version too!
My next story happened near the same time so i cant say it either of these were my first. I was very young at the time and very happy to have a GBC but soon "Mr. Game and Watch fun collection of crap" gets old. so i was bored with this game. Pokemon was all the rage at the time so i said to myself "I have to get Pokemon Silver, even if it kills me." so i asked for it for the nearest holiday I think this was my birthday cause i remember it being hot... so any ways i was put through the same expectations as with LoZ: OT Be Good, No fighting, No talk back..... This time a new string came attached, High Grades. School ends. Report Card comes back. A-, B+, C-, B, D+, B, "Good enough" My dad told me. Of course i had to wait 24 days before my birthday, those days are really hard when your a tyke. I waited, and waited. as in my last story i opened every gift, No Pokemon Silver. I started to panic " Dad you did get me what i wanted right?" "What was it?" Now im extremely nervous, waiting for my new game i almost started crying cause i didn't get it. Finally i get to my Grand parents presents present. " they didn't get me it they're old" I underestimated them. Let me warn you never under estimate your Grand Parents, last year they got me Mass Effect for Christmas. And my sister got me good old Ass Crap
