The best FREE iPhone games

The only apps worth downloading for gamers who are broke from buying an iPhone

Words: Tyler Nagata, GamesRadar US

Did you know that owning an iPhone makes you a better person? It’s true. The Department of Made-up Statistics and Lies (DMSL) recently published a study, which claims that male iPhone users who identify with the “gamer lifestyle” are happier, healthier, and have slightly larger penises than their non-iPhone-owning counterparts. Surprised? We are. Because even though we’ve been spending more time gaming on our iPhone, our penises never felt smaller.

Another more concerning problem: most of the Lite demos and free game apps we’ve come across are just too miserly with the amount of content they give you. There’s something about getting slapped in the face with an advertisement to upgrade after we’ve only played for a few minutes that makes us want to delete the app and forget that we ever downloaded it in the first place. Plus, we’re broke from buying an iPhone in the first place! That’s why we sorted through all the free apps we could find to bring you the real gems that are actually worth downloading.

Above: We don’t like the games promoted in the “Top Free Apps” section in the iTunes Store. So we dug through the trash to find the best stuff for you

iDracula Lite

Download it now from the App Store

iDracula Lite is a relentlessly difficult and bloody overhead shooter that pulls no punches. You’ll control your monster slayer’s movements with your left thumb and blast enemies to bits by aiming with your right thumb. As you fight to survive the relentless waves of beasts charging at you from all directions, you’ll earn points that can be used to purchase various perks. Some of them will speed up your reload time and damage, while others will improve your ability to survive.

The Lite version doesn’t feature all the maps, weapons, and monsters that come with the full version. But trying to best your top score in this demo is still entertaining enough to make the download well worth your time.

Above: iDracula captures the action of Smash TV and adds a bit of Diablo-like gore and RPG goodness to boot

Knights Onrush Free

Download it now from the App Store

Knights Onrush (also known as Onrush) charges you with defending a castle from an army of angry medieval men. The game plays to the strengths of the iPhone’s interface by letting you destroy waves of marauders with the tip of your finger – and when it comes to ways to destroy enemies, you’ll have lots of options. You can send a foot soldier flying with a simple flick. Or, you can press down on him and repeatedly smash him into the ground until he explodes into bits of broken bones and plate mail. You’ll also earn gold after surviving each round, which can be used to purchase more structures to aid you in the defense of your fortress. Our favorite: a giant stone pillar with a meat hook. Just drag and drop an enemy on the hook and wait for a giant dragon to swoop onto the screen to swallow him whole; it’s a great way to take tougher enemy units out of play.

Because you get so many fun toys to play with in Onrush’s Endless Siege mode, the free demo doesn’t feel like too much of a tease and is worth holding on to – even if you don’t wind up purchasing the full version.

Above: Flick, smash, and crush invaders. Or, just feed them to your dragon by hanging them on your sacrificial meat hook

Above: If you decide to purchase the full game, you’ll get more toys to help defend your castle

Taxiball Free

Download it now from the App Store

There are a ton of marble games out there that let you roll around by tilting your iPhone. Forget about them. Taxiball’s the best. Rolling over customers with your round cab and racing towards your destination while avoiding obstacles is great fun and makes all other marble rolling games for the iPhone feel like child’s play. Even though the number of cities available for you to bounce and crash through is limited in this demo, Taxiball is well worth the download.

Above: Your passengers want a smooth ride. Bump into too many buildings and they’ll make a very sad emoticon

iSplume

Download it now from the App Store

Lob colorful eyeballs into the air and bounce them off the walls in your never-ending quest to form matches of three. Watching your Splumes bleed bright colors and hearing them squish and pop is strangely satisfying. Like the original web version, iSplume puts a satisfyingly squishy twist on the traditional gem popper gameplay. You can also rotate your iPhone for a gravity effect, causing the Splumes onscreen to droop or rise to help you make the perfect shot.

Above: Popping eyeballs and watching them bleed colorful splashes of paint looks great

Rolando Lite

Download it now from the App Store

Let’s get the obvious stuff out of the way. The main difference between this game and LocoRoco is that this one’s called “Rolando.” As with LocoRoco, you’ll need to tilt and rotate your iPhone - while adding an occasional flick - to guide your Rolando through the winding levels in this puzzle platformer.

Even though this is a Lite demo, you still get several levels to sample, which should keep you satisfied even if you don’t decide to purchase the full version or the sequel, Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid. As a bonus, the soundtrack is also great – and features kinky songs from British DJ, Mr. Scruff.

Dammit! Now IHAVE to get an iPhone whether I want one or not. They're turning it into an entire platform for indie developers

I am inclined, mister Nagata, to include a few others!
Ahem:

Unblock me Free - a clone of that "Rush Hour" game you sometimes see at puzzle shops. Flick the blocks around to make a path for the orange block - the nice bit is that the free version boasts over 600 levels. Damn!

Tap Tap revenge 2 - yeah you probably know about this one, but how can you overlook this free iphone beat tapper? Downloading new songs to add to your list is fast and also free: it's really a great free little app. (Also, it's free.)

Paper toss - This was like, number one for ages on the itunes charts, but it's no surprise why: it's clean, simple and fun. Backflip studios also put together Ragdoll blaster, a game you should really buy the full version of.

Most Addictive Game - it's a flash port and a simple concept - keep your little red block away from the other blue blocks. But you will play it and you will enjoy it.

Falling gems - a simple match 3 puzzler a la bejewled. You can adjust the gravity with the iphone accelerometer, too!

Wild west Pinball - Sure, there are better pinball games out there, but no free ones that look and play this solid. Easily a no-brainer.

Wolfenstein 3d lite - yeah, you covered this one in a previous article, but I encourage everyone to try the demo. If you're like me, that'll be enough.

Don't hate on the popular stuff, Nagata!

Knights Onrush obviously took inspiration from Castle Crashers

GamesRadar, are you secretly mind readers? I was looking through the App Store last night and saying to myself "someone should make an article that has the best free games." and lo, games radar has such an article.

Rolando is ridiculously fun, and I've been tempted on many occasions to buy the full version, but I've held out for this long.

In response to Bioshocker, I'm amazing, too. I have an ipod touch and they are great! Phenomenal for a phone. Games like Doom and Real Racing are incredible. Real Racing even has a functional cockpit view, with moving parts and everything. it's astounding.

I've been keeping an eye on Parallel Kingdom - the only true MMO I've found in the App Store. They are releasing new content regularly, and it's free (for now...)

have a ton of free titles on my iphone and a few paid too I really like Assassins creed lite and Dante;s Conundrum AC for controls and playability and Dante for just just plain driving me crazy trying to beat it. Downloading Knights Onrush as I type it looks really cool as well

Ragdoll Blaster is amazing, such a simple puzzler but it got the whole "one more go" quality about it.
WaywardRenegade  - 4 months 6 days ago
@ R4PTUR3: You're not amazing! lol

@ zipper: Everything from Storm8 is a "true MMO" (ie. Vampires live, Zombies live, Racing live, Kindoms live, World War live, ex.)

@ ricangamer28: If thats your opinion then why did you bother reading this article...or maybe you didnt read it, because you would see that the games dont suck...like your opinion.

@ Tyler Nagata: thanks, Im going to check some of these games out. I must say though, I'm addicted to the "Vampires live" game from Storm8.

@ Hurricrane

Knights Onrush is obviously not inspired by Castle Crashers. Knights Onrush is a castle defense game and Castle Crashers is more of a hack-and-slash RPG.

I had a lot of fun with Rolando Lite. I almost got the full version, but I figured a game for my PSP would be a better use of my money.

I love the fact that this article's appeared a couple of days before I get a touch. Will deffo be trying Rolando and knights onrush.

Am I the only one who hates Tap Tap Revenge?

Also, if there are any WoW players out there, I highly recommend the World of Warcraft Mobile Armory from Blizzard. It just came out yesterday.
