Another year means another year of amiibos. At least, it does for me and the swarms of other Nintendo Switch 2 accessory collectors out there.

The year has barely even started, and already Nintendo has shared its latest wave of new amiibo, with the announcement of three new figures to tie into the upcoming release of Super Mario Bros Wonder Switch 2 Edition. There's Elphant Mario, Poplin & Prince Florian, and Captain Toad to collect in what is his first ever amiibo representation to date. Pre-orders are already up, and if you're eager to add to your collection you can grab them for $24.99 at Best Buy. There's plenty amiio were they came from too, and you can also pre-purchase the adorable Diana from Pragmata for $29.99 at GameStop right now if you have the budget to spare.

Do you need amiibo for your Nintendo Switch 2?

Amiibos are not the most important accessory for your Nintendo Switch 2. Unlike the best Nintendo Switch headsets, which I swear by for the best gaming on the go experience, you can get by just fine without them. However, they can make your experience with Ninty's latest handheld all the better, providing you have the budget to add one or two to your setup.

I've been collecting the NFC toys since the 3DS era, and have amassed over a hundred of the things, and they not only brighten up my games room but also my time with my favorite games too. Any time I delve back into the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom, I always ensure I have them at arm's length, as tapping the amiibo on the right Joy-Con stick grants me a ton of chests full of extra weapons and resources. For a more recent example, the brand new Animal Crossing New Horizons Version 3.0 update landed, and because I own a vast amount of Zelda and Splatoon amiibo, I was able to invite the new exclusive Zelda and Splatoon villagers to my island, and unlock all the special items that came along with them.

Had I not had any of those amiibo, I'd have missed out on those new additions to one of my favorite Switch games. It's the same for all the figures I've listed above that you don't have to pre-order, but if you want to unlock extra content and experiences in your games, they are the way to go.

We've also rounded up the best Nintendo Switch headsets, the best Nintendo Switch 2 controllers, and the best Nintendo Switch 2 microSD Express Cards for all your Ninty handheld gaming needs. Don't miss the best toys either!

Hardware Editor

Ever since I first held a NES controller in my hand I've been obsessed with gaming, and the hardware it runs on. I could hook up a NES and SNES to a telly, without instructions, before I could walk. Even now, nothing is more exciting then taking a console, or handheld, out the box for the first time and setting it up. This obsession transformed into a love of games and game music, which lead to my music degree and dream of becoming the Scottish Nobuo Uematsu. After sharing my love of games through music, I began to share my love through words on sites like TechRadar and iMore. This lead to becoming a Hardware staff writer for PCGamesN, and later the Senior Tech Writer for Dexerto, covering all things Steam Deck, PlayStation and Nintendo. With that experience, I was able to level up as Hardware Editor for GamesRadar+, where I'm still just as Nintendo, PlayStation and gaming tech obsessed as ever.
