Planet of the Apes is getting a new movie, but studio head hints it might not be a total reboot
Fantastic Four's Matt Shakman is directing a new Planet of the Apes movie
Get ready to return to the Planet of the Apes – only, this time, it looks to be another fresh start of sorts for the sci-fi franchise.
Per Deadline, The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman and writer Josh Friedman are teaming up for a new Planet of the Apes movie. While nothing is known about the plot just yet (aside from it featuring, well, the planet of the apes), the publication's sources indicate that it won't be a continuation of 2024's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Instead, it will be a new story.
That's not confirmed just yet, however, and 20th Century Studios president of production Steve Asbell has hinted that it might not be a complete reboot. "I guess it depends on how you define 'continuation?'" he wrote on Twitter.
Movie fans, though, aren't best pleased by the idea of starting over. "Why would they not continue the story of Noa and the other intelligent human survivors? If it's another time skip that’s one thing, but a complete reboot would be disappointing," said one person on Reddit.
"Bummer. I guess we'll never find out what kind of conflict was going to end up happening between the lady and Noa," says someone else.
"If this means no sequel to Kingdom, that’s crazy given the cliffhanger it ended on and the storylines it put into place. Kingdom wasn't as good as any of the previous trilogy but it was a solid start to a potential new trilogy," is another person's thoughts.
"Why ruin a good thing. This completely makes the last movie pointless unless they incorporate it somehow. I'd rather it not be completely useless tbh," says another person.

"I have remake fatigue to the point where I don't even want to hear about them," is someone else's take.
