FIFA 20 player faces: the best new starheads and likenesses

Being unable to play Ultimate Team without real FIFA 20 player faces is a legitimate phenomenon, which meant some passed on Fabinho, James Maddison and Axel Witsel – to name three – for the entirety of FIFA 19’s lifetime. Happy news, then: FIFA 20 adds real likenesses – starheads, as they’re known in the community – for that trio of tenacious midfielders, and a few hundred more new or refreshed faces for good measure. Below we’ve cherry picked the most authentic of these chiselled jaws and questionable hair-don’ts for our FIFA 20 player faces guide.

Fabinho (Liverpool)

A colossus in FIFA 19 whether deployed at CDM or CB (he received a position-changed card in week 18), any enjoyment of having Fabinho in your side slumped every time the camera zoomed in on his expressionless genero-head. That’s rectified for FIFA 20, and there’s a re-captured model of skipper Jordan Henderson for the league leaders to swoon over too.

Blaise Matuidi (Piemonte Calcio)

We might not have the old lady of Turin in game any more - for an explanation of why Matuidi now plays for Piemonte Calcio, check out our FIFA 20 Juventus story - but we do at least get some new face scans to put in fake black-and-pink kits. Matuidi is the pick of the bunch, but Federico Bernardeschi, Miralem Pjanic and Mattia De Sciglio are fairly dashing too.

Axel Witsel (Borussia Dortmund)

“Thanks, but can we fix my game face first?” wrote Witsel to EA on Twitter in December 2018 after the announcement of his week-14 TOTW card. Much like Jesse Lingard and Wilfried Zaha ahead of FIFA 19, directly lobbying the developers has done the trick. Always solid Dortmund keeper Roman Burki is also scanned for the first time.

Seydou Doumbia (Sion)

The king is back! Doumbia proved such a cult Ultimate Team hit in his Roma days that EA awarded him an 87-rated flashback player in FIFA 19. Now he gets his proper face in the game too. Sadly Fredy Guarin and Marco Sau – similarly beloved community favourites of FIFA 15 and FIFA 16 respectively – still retain the genero-face treatment of previous editions. Bah.

Joao Cancelo (Manchester City)

As explained in our FIFA 20 vs PES 2020 comparison, Manchester City are one of EA’s partner clubs - so it’s no surprise that more than half their first team have been newly scanned or refreshed. Step forward Cancelo, Kyle Walker, Ederson, Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan, Raheem Sterling, Rodri, and David Silva. Oh, and…

Sergio Aguero (Manchester City)

Finally, finally, finally EA has ditched the mohawk last worn by City’s record goalscorer way back in 2016. For now FIFA 20 has Aguero’s likeness perfect, right down to the blonde streaks in his hair. No doubt he’ll find a way to make it out of date again by January - a crewcut, extensions, shaving the City badge into the back - but in the meantime let’s all agree to enjoy its currentness.

Adama Traore (Wolves)

A slightly more painful one for City fans next on the list. The scourge of Moss Side after his double strike earned Wolves a shock 2-0 win in October, Traore has more reason to celebrate with the addition of his real likeness to FIFA 20. And yes, his 96 (ninety-six!!) sprint speed makes him deadly in Ultimate Team despite only having a silver card.

Eden Hazard (Real Madrid)

Real Madrid winger Vinicius Jr’s new starhead is literally unmissable: he fronts an unskippable Volta cutscene on first launching the game. But he’s not the only updated Real player, with Carvajal’s facial hair getting a tidy-up, and summer signing Hazard - a lock for the FIFA 20 best players list when he inevitably scores his first TOTW - also sporting some voluminous chin-fluff.

Fred (Manchester United)

Half the planet has seen the video of team-mate Andreas Pereira’s reaction when Fred fails to control a simple pass in the defeat to Newcastle – so here’s something to make the Brazilian feel a little more upbeat. He and Diego Dalot both get real likenesses for the first time, while there are well-overdue updates for David de Gea and Luke Shaw.

Hamza Choudhury (Leicester City)

Leicester fans are rightly excited to have James Maddison scanned after missing out last year, but centre-mid battle partner Choudhury’s likeness is even more impressive thanks to that incredible hair. Ricardo Pereira and Caglar Soyuncu are new, too. We also have to sing the praises of City’s pink away strip - more on that in our guide to FIFA 20 kits.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea)

RLC’s boy-band looks have been horribly misrepresented in FIFA since breaking through on loan at Crystal Palace, but finally the Chelsea and England midfielder gets a haircut and some proper stubble in FIFA 20. Marcos Alonso, Jorginho and Cesar Azpilicueta are also updated, while Loftus-Cheek’s compatriot Callum Hudson-Odoi receives a starhead for the first time.

Alex Iwobi (Everton)

At the time of writing Everton are flirting with relegation (and manager Marco Silva with his P45), so here’s some better news for long-suffering Goodison regulars: fresh scans for summer singings Iwobi and Moise Kean, in addition to Bernard, Theo Walcott, Gylfi Sigurdsson, and Seamus Coleman. From the Toffees’ new intake, only Jean-Philippe Gbamin is stuck with generic-head-itis.

Matteo Guendouzi (Arsenal)

An exciting first scan for Guendouzi and the most spectacular barnet this side of, er, Barnet – but big news too regarding Hector Bellerin: his painfully outdated FIFA 16 likeness has been upgraded. Hallelujah. Elsewhere on the Gunners front Lucas Torreira and Konstantinos Mavrapanos score starheads for the first time, while Denis Suarez was also scanned before departing for Celta Vigo.

Chris Smalling (Roma)

A new start for the England defender in Italy this summer - and a new facial likeness which finally sees his ‘cornrow x bantu knot’ hybrid represented. By the way, if you’re looking for easy FIFA 20 coins this season then keep an eye out for his card at discard price. English defenders at foreign clubs spike in value intermittently, as they’re regularly needed for FIFA 20 SBC solutions
