Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 is finally here, with the show now officially airing on Crunchyroll. The first installment quickly became a fan favorite after it hit the anime streamer in 2023, and it's safe to say it's one of the best anime series currently on their library.
There's still plenty in store for the elf mage Frieren and her pals as their adventures continue northwards, and we can't wait to see what's next. Frieren: Beyond Journey's season 2 is releasing in on January 16, 2026.
That means it's one of the first big confirmed winter 2026 releases alongside the final part of Fire Force season 3 and Jujutsu Kaisen season 3.
According to anime insider Sugoi LITE, season 2 will only have 10 episodes. If confirmed, this would be a shocking episode count for the show, which released 28 episodes during its first season. Let's hope this rumor is not accurate – come back to this space for more information.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 story: which manga chapters is it adapting?
The first season of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End revolved around the saga of the titular mage as she reckoned with her fellow band of heroes' fleeting mortality and what it meant for her own place in the world as an elf who can far outlast the lifespan of those she meets. After defeating the Demon King, she returns decades later to find her allies elderly or on the verge of death.
To that end, she embarked on an epic journey to say a proper farewell to Himmel, one of the heroes who she fought alongside to defeat the Demon King, in the northern land of Aureole.
Along the way, she encounters several people who have been touched by the heroism of her friends, as well as defeating the remnants of the Demon King's forces. A meditation on legacy, life, and dealing with a world and people that will leave her behind, it truly stands as one of the past decade's towering anime works.
But that was the first season. What's next? The first season of Frieren ended with Frieren and Fern aiming to complete their mage exams. Fern becomes a First Class mage (seemingly at the whims of instructor Serie), which means Frieren and her party will then be able to cross further into the northern territories. Frieren, however, discovers she's been banned from the Magic Associaton for the next 1000 years.
Now, Frieren will continue her journey to Aureole so she can say goodbye to Himmel. We anticipate that Frieren season 2 will pick up from chapter 61 of Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe's manga to cover the Continued Northern Travels arc which takes Frieren, Fern, and Stark into uncharted territory.
Personally, we can't see it going too far beyond the Goddess' Monument arc, especially because it's rapidly catching up to the source material. That means Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 could cover chapters 61-119, almost mirroring the first season's 60-chapter adaptation.
"In Season Two, Frieren will travel to new lands with her new party. We’ll explore fresh dynamics, new combat situations, and all of the characters' changing mindsets. It’ll be exciting to see how their roles develop and how Frieren grows through these experiences," director Yuichiro Fukushi told ScreenRant at AnimeExpo.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 trailer and first look
The first look at Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 arrived earlier this year courtesy of main character-centric key art (which you can see below). It's a tranquil, relaxing scene – one that involves Frieren, Fern, and Stark taking a stop on their journey and dipping their feet into a crystal clear body of water. A second visual, featuring the trio in a crystalline environment, was released in September 2025.
The main pre-release promotional material stems from a November trailer, which sees Frieren reminiscing more on her relationship with Himmel and her fellow band of heroes. Watch it for yourself above.
Frieren: Beyond Journey's End season 2 cast: confirmed returning characters
There hasn't been official confirmation of the full Frieren season 2 cast, though Frieren (Atsumi Tanezaki) will return, despite Tanezaki's well-publicized health issues that has forced her to take a hiatus. and Fern (Kana Ichinose) and Stark are also back (Chiaki Kobayashi). Himmel (Nobuhiko Okamoto), Heiter (Hiroki Tochi), and Eisen (Yoji Ueda) should again provide some blasts from the past.
The manga's creators, Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe, have also revealed they are returning for the next season. They said in a statement (H/T CBR), "We owe it all to everyone who has supported us. We are eternally grateful to everyone involved who has made this wonderful anime."
Where to watch Frieren: Beyond Journey's End
The first season of Frieren is currently streaming on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
We predict the second season will be streaming day-and-date on Crunchyroll, with a Netflix release in 2027 – if it matches the first season's timeframe, anyway.
