Daredevil: Born Again season 2 finale features a huge Iron Man Easter egg
Is Matt's big moment a call-back to the origins of the MCU?
Daredevil: Born Again's second season has just come to a suitably explosive conclusion, seemingly wrapping up two seasons' worth of plot threads in a terrific season finale.
As well as seeing Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) and the gangster-turned-politician Wilson Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio) clash once more, the show made what seemed like an explicit call back to the very beginnings of the MCU. If you're not yet caught up on the new run, then make sure to watch the episode first before reading on, as we're about to get into full spoilers for the season finale...
Daredevil: Born Again season 2 episode 8 saw Fisk – AKA Kingpin – finally on trial for his many crimes. Leading the case against him was Matt Murdock, who intended to prove that it was Fisk behind the destruction of the Northern Star earlier in the season.
Article continues belowMatt brings on Christofi Savva (Yorgos Karamihos), the first mate of the Northern Star, to testify against Fisk, but it's still not quite enough. That leads Matt to take drastic action. Realizing that the only way to bring Fisk down is to incriminate himself, Matt manipulates Fisk into admitting that the only person who could prove that Fisk was behind the ship's bombing was Daredevil. Fisk is betting that Matt won't reveal his secret identity – but he's dead wrong. Matt bounces his billy cub off the courtroom wall, catching it again thanks to his enhanced senses and declaring "I am Daredevil" in front of an astonished crowd.
It's a jaw-dropping moment and one that feels like a direct callback to one of the most famous scenes in the entire MCU. At the end of 2005's Iron Man – the film that kicked the entire franchise off, let's not forget – billionaire playboy Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) goes rogue and reveals to an assembled crowd of reporters, "I am Iron Man."
The consequences for Tony Stark and for Matt Murdock are quite different. Tony becomes an idol to millions and heads up the first iteration of The Avengers. Matt, for his sins, is slammed in jail, where he remains at the very end of the season.
Still, given that we know that Daredevil: Born Again season 3 is in production, we reckon it won't be too long before Matt Murdock is free and protecting the people of Hell's Kitchen once again. Given some of the threats still in play after this season finale, they're going to need him...
