Prepare for debrief!

Prepare for debrief!

So you've just watched the brand new SPECTRE trailer. Let's go full Bond geek and decrypt the classified intel encoded within its frames... Commence Operation Breakdown! By Nick Setchfield

From Mexico with death

From Mexico with death

Mexico's macabre Day of the Dead festival provides an evocative backdrop for SPECTRE's pre-titles sequence, delivering the kind of classic local colour seen in the junkanoo parade in Thunderball and the eerie street carnival in Moonraker.

The walking dead

The walking dead

Bond's disguise nods to the iconically ghoulish Baron Samedi in Live And Let Die - a formative 007 film for both Daniel Craig and director Sam Mendes. The skull also recalls Richard Chopping's memorably creepy cover artwork for the first edition of Ian Fleming's Goldfinger.

Trigger finger

Trigger finger

For all that Bond has a licence to kill it's rare to see him operating as a remote assassin, removed from the blood and thunder of the action. Craig gets to play sniper here, just like Dalton's 007 in The Living Daylights.

Back in service

Back in service

A nattily attired Bond strides purposefully through the new offices of MI6, refurbished after the devastation unleashed by Silva in Skyfall. Daniel Craig has a damn cool walk, doesn't he?

Optional extras

Optional extras

"A few little tricks up her sleeve," promises Q - who's clearly reversed his snotty hipster stance on government issue gizmology since the events of Skyfall. Quite right too.

The car's the star

The car's the star

"Magnificent, isn't she?" Pure Bond iconography - our first Q-shows-Bond-the-motor scene since 2002's Die Another Day, unbelievably. That's an ultra-limited edition Aston Martin DB10 updating this homage to the legendary sequence in Goldfinger. And no, you can't buy one unless your name is Broccoli.

Vanishing act

Vanishing act

"Do one thing for me," asks Bond. "Make me disappear." We're probably safe to assume this isn't a reference to the infamous invisible Aston Martin Vanquish from Die Another Day...

White knight

White knight

"He's everywhere!" declares a spectacularly dishevelled Mr White, echoing the line "We have people everywhere!" from Quantum Of Solace. The chess board in the foreground recalls SPECTRE operative Kronsteen's game in From Russia With Love

Pure magnetism, darling

Pure magnetism, darling

Roger Moore's Bond required a magnetic watch to unzip Madeline Smith's dress in Live And Let Die. Craig's 007 opts for the manual approach...

OHMSS

OHMSS

If the thrilling alpine action doesn't conjure memories of On Her Majesty's Secret Service then the stirring re-orchestration of John Barry's OHMSS theme hammers the point home... We doubt this immortal cue will feature in the movie but it's a goosebump-inducing gift to Bond fans in the trailer.

Tentacles, everywhere...

Tentacles, everywhere...

As global criminal organisations go, SPECTRE clearly has a firm grip on brand management. Here's their iconic octopus logo, last seen on Blofeld's one-man mini-sub in Diamonds Are Forever.

In memoriam

In memoriam

See those names on the memorial to those who have fallen in the line of duty? They're actually the names of the movie's crew, immortalised on screen. Laura Barden, for instance, was also junior model maker on Star Wars: The Force Awakens...

In the shadows

In the shadows

"You came across me so many times," declares Christoph Waltz, "yet you never saw me..." Could this be the unseen puppet-master behind every film in the Daniel Craig era? Intriguing...

All aboard

All aboard

Another Bond tradition reinstated as Lea Seydoux makes a shimmering, showstopping entrance into the dining car of a luxury train. We've seen train scenes in a number of classic Bond movies, including From Russia With Love, The Spy Who Loved Me and, more recently, Casino Royale. It's the only way to travel.

Jacket required

Craig's rocking the white tuxedo jacket, homaging Sean Connery's sartorial choices in Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. We last saw Bond wear a white tux in 1985's A View To A Kill.

Push the button

Push the button

We've already seen that Bond's new Aston comes equipped with rear-mounted flamethrower. We're tickled to see this piece of goon-frying gadgetry is activated by a button marked "Backfire". Digging the retro Dymo labelling, too.

Getting lairy

Getting lairy

This may be the single most thrilling frame in the trailer. It gives us an oh so tantalising glimpse of what appears to be a classic villainous lair, complete with banks of monitor screens - very Hugo Drax - and what must surely be a private army of faceless SPECTRE goons, ready to do backflips as fireballs explode on a Pinewood soundstage. Are there monorails too? Tell us there are monorails. We need monorails. Mmm, monorails.

"My name is..."

"My name is..."

So the official line remains that Christoph Waltz may or may not be playing Ernst Stavro Blofeld. But just look at that collarless jacket. It's the traditional wardrobe staple of world-threatening masterminds. You need a masters degree in international blackmail to even dream of slipping one on. But given Waltz tells Bond that he's "the author of all your pain" then maybe he's really playing Ian Fleming? Wow. Meta.

Ruddy Moriarty. Gets everywhere.

Pay attention 007 and listen closely, because the first full-length trailer for SPECTRE has appeared online, and is every bit as action-packed as we could have hoped for.

Compared to the quieter teaser trailer, there's an insane amount of action going on here, From Bond's brand new Aston Martin hitting the streets, to what looks like an extremely impressive mountainside chase, to a helicopter going loopy. Plus, Léa Seydoux's character is brought into focus, as is the personal nature of 007's latest mission.

Directed by Sam Mendes and co-starring Daniel Craig, Monica Bellucci, Christoph Waltz and Lea Seydoux, SPECTRE will open in the UK on 26 October 2015 and the US on 6 November 2015.
