Don’t rule out seeing Matthew McConaughey in a future comic-book movie universe after he teased projects in a recent interview.
Speaking to Variety ahead of his Cannes Film Festival appearance - he’s starring in Gus Van Sant’s in competition effort, The Sea Of Trees - the Oscar-winner admitted that he’s read several comic-book scripts from rival publishing/production houses Marvel and DC.
Asked if he’d ever go in for a superhero flick, McConaughey responded, “I’ve read some Marvel and DC scripts and I’ve talked about working with them on some scripts, none of which I’ll share with with you what they are — or were. Yeah, I’ve circled some of those. Nothing has been right for me yet. But I’m sure open to it.”
He went on to explain that he’d be hesitant to contract himself to a multi-picture deal unless he was sure that he’d want to return to the story and character again and again.
McConaughey’s changeable charisma and varying physicality (he shed his famous muscles for his role in Dallas Buyers Club) mean he could be well suited to playing a pretty wide range of characters from any comic movie-verse. Although let’s not forget, he was rumoured for Captain America (along with a host of other A-listers) before Chris Evans landed the role.
