Tactical battles on the go
Upgradable armies, fast-paced multiplayer, and intense strategic battles aren't usually on the bullet-point description of a mobile game. That's why developer Quark Games hopes to expand the hardcore gaming audience to mobile and tablet devices with its tile-based, tactical title Champs: Battlegrounds. To make its game appeal to advanced players, the developer is promising that its game will have the complexity, strategy, and skill-based gameplay you'd get from competitive titles like League of Legends.
The multiplayer-centric mobile title let's players battle head-to-head online with six-unit squads on a tiled map. Before each match, players can customize their team with various upgradable unit types that range from the close-combat squires and long-ranged archers to magic-using healers and crowd-controlling engineer units. Each base unit can branch out into more specialized and powerful archetypes. For instance, the squire can be upgraded to a defensive knight or a damage-dealing, dual-wielding axeman. The map also consists of tiles that can provide environmental bonuses like damage and hit-chance boosts for those standing on elevated sections, enhancing the strategy options in combat.
Champs: Battlegrounds doesn't have turn-based matches; instead, it's battles play out in real-time. Character actions and movement are limited by an abilities gauge with three levels of skills for each unit. More powerful abilities take much longer to charge up, forcing you to juggle your characters' positioning, attack synergies, and vulnerabilities in a frantically paced battle.
